Bearcats Shut Out Shockers in Finale

WICHITA, Kan. – Three Cincinnati pitchers held Wichita State to two total hits, as the Bearcats completed the three-game sweep with a 4-0 win on Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

Tristan Weaver (4-3) went the first five innings for the Bearcats, giving up one single in the second inning to Gage Williams and one in the fourth to Brock Rodden. Zach Segal then tossed three hitless, scoreless innings of relief, and Max Bergmann worked a 1-2-3 ninth to complete the shutout. Wichita State did not advance a runner to third base in the game.

The defeat spoiled another sterling effort on the mound from Wichita State starter Cameron Bye (3-1) who allowed just two runs over seven innings, striking out six and conceding only four singles. The Bearcats (16-18) got to Bye with two outs in the fourth, stringing together five consecutive runners after Bye retired the first two hitters of the inning. Ryan Nicholson and Wyatt Stapp both notched RBI singles in the inning for a 2-0 lead.

The Bearcats pushed across single runs in the eighth and ninth against the Wichita State bullpen. Griffin Merritt dumped a run-scoring single into left to plate Kerrington Cross, and Paul Komistek sliced an opposite-field solo homer in the ninth for the game's final margin.

The Shockers are off on Sunday before welcoming in Kansas State on Monday night. First pitch from Eck Stadium at Tyler Field is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
