Tolle Nails Down Honor Roll Nod

3/7/2022 12:00:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State freshman Payton Tolle was named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll, the conference announced Monday.

Tolle impressed both at the plate and on the mound for the Shockers at the Frisco Classic. He began his week with a two-hit game against Oral Roberts on Tuesday, picking up his first collegiate RBI with a seventh inning run-scoring single. Starting as the designated hitter on Friday against Iowa, Tolle added up two more hits, highlighted by a game-tying three-run double in the top of the sixth that helped Wichita State erase a 4-0 deficit.

Tolle got the Saturday start on the bump against Washington State and spun a gem, limiting the Cougars to a single run over seven innings with four strikeouts. The native of Yukon, Okla., allowed six hits and walked two, picking up his second victory of the season as the Shockers rolled to an 8-2 win. For the season, Tolle has now allowed just two earned runs in 19.1 innings, good for a 0.93 ERA. Opponents are hitting a meager .219 this season against the 6'6 freshman.

Sunday produced more heroics from Tolle, as he launched a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to help Wichita State rally past Texas A&M 6-5 and win the Frisco Classic. The home run was estimated at 419 feet by the Rider Field Trackman system, and helped Tolle fashion his third consecutive two-hit game.

Tolle was named Frisco Classic MVP, earning a spot on the All-Tournament team at both Starting Pitcher and Designated Hitter. He is the first Shocker to garner recognition on the American Weekly Honor Roll in 2022.
