The Wichita State women's tennis team travels to Texas this weekend for matches against Abilene Christian (Saturday, 1 p.m. CT) and UT Arlington (Sunday, 2 p.m.)

The Shockers (6-6) played without No. 1 singles player Natsumi Kurahashi (non-COVID illness) in last Friday's 7-0 loss to No. 70 Memphis.

Wichita native and true freshman Clara Whitaker is a team-best 9-3 in dual matches while splitting time between the Nos. 2-6 spots.

Next weekend the Shockers play host to Cincinnati (Thursday, Mar. 17, Noon CT) and South Florida (Friday, Mar. 18, Noon). Weather permitting, they'll make their home outdoor debut at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.

at ABILENE CHRISTIAN (5-6)
Saturday, Mar. 5 | 1 p.m. CT
Abilene, Texas | ACU Outdoor Tennis Courts
  • WSU has split four meetings all-time against ACU. The Shockers made the trip to Abilene last year and lost 4-2. The only Shocker holdovers from that match, Natsumi Kurahashi and Jessie Zheng, accounted for both of the points, scoring with wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles.
  • WSU won a neutral court match over ACU in Stillwater, Okla. to open up the 2019-20 season.
  • ACU is 2-6 against Division I competition with wins over UTSA (4-3) and UTEP (7-0).
  • The Cougars finished 12-13 last season and advanced to the Southland Conference semifinals. This is their first year competing in the Western Athletic Conference.

at UT ARLINGTON (9-1)
Sunday, Mar. 6 | 2 p.m. CT
Arlington, Texas | UTA Tennis Center
  • This is series meeting No. 11. WSU leads 8-2 (7-2 under Foster) but lost to the Mavs last season in Arlington. The last Shocker win was a 4-0 sweep in February, 2020 at the Wichita Country Club.
  • A pair of returning All-Sun Belt selections anchor the Maverick lineup. Momoka Horiguchi was First Team All-SBC last season at No. 1 singles and Carla Pons earned second team honors.
  • UTA suffered its first loss of the year on Feb. 27 (4-0 at No. 36 SMU).
  • Helped by seven matches against non-Division I opponents, UTA opened the year 9-0 before suffering its first loss on Feb. 27 against No. 36 SMU.
  • UT meets Houston on Friday night in Dallas before returning home to host the Shockers.
  • UTA will join Abilene Christian next Fall in the Western Athletic Conference, becoming the league's 15th member and eighth Texas-based school.
