Wichita State Drops Series Opener

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State was held to just four hits by two Creighton pitchers, as the Bluejays claimed game one of the series 6-1 on Friday night at Eck Stadium.

Creighton (10-6) struck in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly from Chris Esposito. Seth Stroh tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third with his first home run of the season, but that would prove to be the only run that the Shockers could muster against Creighton starter Dylan Tebrake (3-1). Tebrake went six strong innings, allowing four hits and one run with six strikeouts and one walk.

Shockers starter Jace Kaminska (1-2) kept the game tied 1-1 into the sixth, but started the inning with a pair of walks. After a double play moved the lead runner to third, Nolan Sailors pulled a two-out RBI single to give the Bluejays a 2-1 lead. A Wichita State throwing error added another run in the inning to extend the lead to 3-1.

Creighton tacked on an additional run in the seventh on a fielding error, and then Jared Wegner provided the final blow with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth.

Bluejays reliever Paul Bergstrom picked up a three-inning save, allowing just one baserunner on a walk while striking out two.

The Shockers last scoring threat came in the bottom of the seventh, when Chuck Ingram singled, Gage Williams walked and a wild pitch advanced them to second and third with two outs. But Bergstrom retired pinch-hitter Couper Cornblum on a sharp grounder to first to stymie the rally.

Sawyre Thornhill's 19-game hitting streak came to an end, as he finished 0-for-3 with a walk.

The Shockers and Bluejays continue the series on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
