Shockers Survive in Overtime vs. Tulane

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State finally got a bounce to go its way. The Shockers survived an overtime battle with Tulane on Senior Night, defeating the Green Wave, 84-83.

Wichita State (14-15, 5-11) snapped a three-game losing streak and Tulane's nine-game win streak in the process.

The Shockers led by one in the final seconds of overtime and needed an Arsula Clark offensive rebound and putback layup to roll off the rim to escape with tight win on Senior Night.

Asia Strong scored a game and season-high 22 points on 8-of-18 shooting in her home finale. Mariah McCully logged her first career double-double in her final home game, registering 19 points and 10 assists. Carla Bremaud knocked down 4-of-9 three-pointers to finish with a season-high 14 points. Trajata Colbert added her second straight double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Wichita State shot 40 percent (8-of-20) from beyond the arc and held Tulane to just 4-of-19. Tulane was able to make up for a lack of three-point shooting by getting to the free throw line. The Green Wave went 27-of-36 from the stripe, while Wichita State attempted to just 16.

Wichita State shot 56 percent from the field in the first quarter, which helped them build an eight-point lead. After the Shockers grabbed an eight-point advantage, Tulane responded with an 8-0 run to tie it at 22. A pair of Trajata Colbert free throws gave the Shockers a 24-22 lead after 10 minutes.

Carla Bremaud got off to a hot start, scoring eight points in the period.

Both teams cooled off in the second quarter, as Wichita State went the final 6:22 without a field goal. They scored their final four points from the free throw line and still held a 37-36 halftime lead.

Tulane wasn't able to take advantage, as they were just 5-for-16 from the field in the second quarter.

McCully's 11 first half points led all scorers at the break, followed by Bremaud with eight.

Two minutes into the third quarter Wichita State pushed its lead back to seven. Tulane fought back to tie it at 49 with 3:39 on the clock and would then take a 57-52 lead after three quarters of play.

The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair with it being played within a two-point margin over the final 6:24. Wichita State regained the lead on back-to-back layups from Strong with 2:17 to go.

Tulane tied it four times in the final two minutes every time Wichita State went back in front by a basket. With the game tied at 73 with 55 seconds to go, Trajata Colbert hit 1-of-2 at the free throw line to give the Shockers a one-point lead. After two empty possessions Tulane's Arsula Clark was fouled on a defensive rebound, sending her to the line with 9 seconds left and a chance to put Tulane in front.

Clark missed the first but hit the second to tie it at 74. Wichita State called timeout to advance and turned it over on the inbounds pass, sending the Green Wave out in transition and a chance to win, but Dynah Jones was called for a double-dribble. A Bremaud three-point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the backboard, sending it to overtime.

In the overtime session neither team led by more than two points. Tulane's Krystal Freeman put the Green Wave up 79-77 with 2:01 left, but Bremaud came right back with a huge trey to put the Shockers ahead by a point.

After trading the lead two more times, Wichita State grabbed an 84-83 lead on a pair of Strong free throws with just 13.7 seconds left. With one final chance Tulane had a wide open look on Arsula Clark's layup as time expired, but it came up short, giving the Shockers a dramatic win in the regular season finale.
