WICHITA, Kan. – New Mexico starter Riley Egloff blanked Wichita State over eight innings, powering the Lobos to a 4-0 win in the series opener on Friday night at Eck Stadium.
Egloff (4-0) allowed just four hits over his eight frames, striking out nine while walking three. The right-hander threw 111 pitches and allowed just one Wichita State baserunner to reach third base. Brian McBroom struck out the side in the ninth to nail down the win for New Mexico (7-11).
Wichita State's
Jace Kaminska (1-1) put together a strong start of his own, allowing just a single run through the first five innings on an RBI groundout from Adam Schneider in the top of the second. In the sixth, however, a three-base error by WSU left fielder
Sawyre Thornhill helped the Lobos score three times, extending the lead to 4-0. Jeffrey David's two-out RBI single capped the scoring in the inning.
Reliever
Caden Favors put together the best outing of his young career after taking over for Kaminska in the sixth. The left-hander fired 3.2 scoreless innings with a career-best six strikeouts, allowing only two hits to keep the Shockers within striking distance.
The Shockers last scoring threat came in the bottom of the eighth. Thornhill extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a double down the left field line, and with two outs
Ross Cadena was hit by a pitch. But Egloff escaped the jam, getting
Chuck Ingram to bounce into an inning-ending fielder's choice.
Wichita State and New Mexico continue the series on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
