Shockers Fend Off Iowa in Wild Sunday Finale

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Wichita State overcame an early 4-0 deficit to clip Iowa 8-7 on Sunday afternoon at Whataburger Field.

The game ended on a bizarre play. Iowa (4-2) had runners at first and second with one out against Wichita State closer Connor Holden. The Hawkeyes Brendan Sher hit a slow ground ball to first baseman Payton Tolle, who tossed to shortstop Andrew Stewart at second for the force out. Iowa runner Brayden Frazier went into second base standing, prompting the third base umpire to signal interference for a game-ending double play.

It was a fitting end for a game that featured 14 walks, seven hit batters, four balks, and 15 runs on only 14 hits. The Shockers (2-6) quickly fell into a 3-0 hole in the top of the first, as Iowa drew first blood on two bases-loaded balks and a sacrifice fly against WSU starter Will Stevens. An RBI double from Peyton Williams in the top of the second extended the Hawkeyes lead to 4-0.

Wichita State began to chip away in the bottom of the second inning. After Couper Cornblum battled his way to a walk, Chuck Ingram sliced an opposite field two-run homer down the right field line, halving the deficit at 4-2. It was the first home run of the season for Ingram.

Brock Rodden continued the power surge in the next inning, cranking a long solo home run to right center that sliced the Iowa lead to 4-3. Sher kicked off the top of the fourth with a solo homer of his own to make it 5-3, but Wichita State answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning when Rodden was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Sawyre Thornhill followed with a run-scoring walk to tie the game at 5-5.

Keaton Anthony briefly restored the lead for Iowa with an RBI single into center in the fifth, but an infield single from Ross Cadena in the bottom of the inning leveled the score once again at 6-6.

The Shockers finally surged in front in the sixth when Thornhill led off with a single, moved to second on a balk, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundout from Ingram. Cadena provided much-needed insurance in the seventh with an RBI single back through the middle to score Xavier Casserilla, who led off with a walk. Cadena finished the day 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

The Hawkeyes clawed back within 8-7 via a Williams RBI single in the eighth, but Cameron Bye got Anthony on a fly out to right to preserve the lead.

LJ McDonough (1-1) picked up the win in relief for Wichita State, firing a career-best 3.2 innings featuring a career-high eight strikeouts. Holden notched his second save with the scoreless ninth.

Brody Brecht (1-1) took the loss for Iowa, allowing two runs over 1.2 innings of work.

The Shockers are off on Monday before heading to Tulsa for a matchup with Oral Roberts on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
