Shockers End Three-Game Road Trip at South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. - Wichita State finishes its three-game road trip with another visit to the Sunshine State to face South Florida Tuesday night.

ON THE AIR
Tuesday's game can be heard on the radio at KFH 97.5 FM/1240 AM with Steve Strain calling the action. Strain is in his eighth season as the radio voice for Wichita State women's basketball. The game will also be televised on ESPN+ and the ESPN app.

LAST TIME OUT
Wichita State rebounded from a loss at UCF to defeat Memphis on the road, 68-61, last Saturday. Wichita State and Memphis were tied with 1:35 remaining, but scored six points in just over 30 seconds and eventually a 10-0 run to pull away with a road win. Wichita State forced Memphis into 20 turnovers, while committing only 11. That led to outscoring the Tigers, 25-11 off turnovers and 16-0 in fast break points. Mariah McCully registered her fourth 20-point game of the season with 23 points, five boards, four assists and three steals. Asia Strong recorded her fifth straight game in double figures with 17 and Trajata Colbert added 10 points and 7 rebounds off the bench. Seraphine Bastin dished out a season-high nine assists to go with six points and six boards.

SCOUTING THE BULLS
South Florida enters the matchup in second place in the league standings at 8-3. The Bulls own two top 10 wins this season over No. 7 Stanford and No. 9 Oregon. Two of their four losses were by single digits to No. 16 Tennessee and No. 2 UConn. Elena Tsineke leads a balanced scoring attack at 14.5 points per game followed by Bethy Mununga and Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu at 11.1. Mununga also pulls down 11.6 boards per game, which leads the American. Mununga ranks ninth in the NCAA with 289 rebounds, 12th in rebounds per game and 8th in defensive rebounds per game (8.2). Elisa Pinzan leads the conference and ranks 20th nationally in assists with 135.

THE SERIES VS. SOUTH FLORIDA
Wichita State and USF have met six times prior to Sunday's matchup, with USF holding a 4-2 lead. Wichita State won the first two meetings, but the Bulls have won the last four. The first ever meeting came all the way back in Feb. 1983 on a nuetral court that Wichita State won going away, 75-52. Wichita State is 0-2 all-time in the Yuengling Center.

LAST MEETING
Wichita State had the top-seed South Florida Bulls on the ropes in the quarterfinals of last year's American Athletic Conference Championship. The Shockers held a five-point halftime lead before a late rally pushed the Bulls to a slim 48-44 win. Wichita State held USF to season lows in points, field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage, but also struggled on its offensive end, going just 1-of-11 from beyond the arc. Trajata Colbert scored a team-high 13 points and Mariah McCully added 11 off the bench. Seraphine Bastin chipped in 10 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists.

WANTED FOR THEFT
Wichita State senior guard Mariah McCully has been pest on defense for opposing offenses through 24 games this season. McCully had her streak of 14 straight games with a steal  snapped vs. UCF, but has swiped at least one in 21 of the 24 games she's played. She's had multiple in 14 of the 24. Her 46 steals easily lead the team and rank sixth in the American Athletic Conference. Her 1.92 steals per game also rank sixth in the conference. During her first season at Wichita State (2019-20), McCully had a career-long 19-game streak with a steal, including a career-high seven at Tulane on Feb. 16, 2020.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING      
Wichita State is ranked in the top 100 nationally in 11 categories after the first 25 games. The Shockers rank No. 16 in offensive rebounds per game (15.4), No. 17 in rebounds per game (42.40), No. 27 in total rebounds (1,060), No. 58 in free throw percentage (74.8 percent), No. 69 in rebound margin (4.7), No. 81 in blocked shots (98), No. 82 in three-point field goal defense (28.8 percent), No. 85 in blocked shots per game (3.9), No. 85 in field goal percentage defense (37.7 percent), No. 92 in steals (221) and No. 95 in steals per game (8.8).

GLASS CLEANERS
Wichita State is off to an impressive start rebounding the basketball through its first 25 games. The Shockers have outrebounded all but eight teams and currently average 42.4 rebounds a game, which ranks 17th nationally. Their 1060 total rebounds rank 27th in the NCAA. Wichita State ranks 16th in offensive rebounds per game and 69th in rebound margin. As it stands now, Four different Shockers pull down at least 5.4 boards per game, led by Jane Asinde at 8.6.

DYNAMIC POINT GUARD
• Wichita State point guard Seraphine Bastin had her best season in a Shocker uniform in 2020-21. Bastin averaged 10.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.3 steals a game, while shooting 78.7 percent from the free throw line. The 5-foot-8 guard led the team in rebounding, assists, steals and double-doubles. In The American, Bastin ranked second in free throw percentage, third in assists, fourth in rebounding and fifth in assist-turnover ratio.

• She is off to another great start on the glass in 2021-22. Her 7.0 rebounds rank second on the team, and she's already had five games with 10 boards. In all but four games she's had five or more rebounds. Her season low is two.

• Bastin entered the Wichita State top 10 list for career assists on Nov. 26 vs. Alcorn State. She passed Allison Daniel who held the No. 10 spot with 308 career dimes. She has since moved into sole possession of 7th. Bastin is already in the top 10 for career assists per game at 3.8. Her 3.8 helpers rank ninth best in school history.

• The Dinant, Belgium, native has a bulldog mentality and that is evident in her rebounding. Bastin led Wichita State and ranked sixth in the American Athletic Conference in rebounding at 7.7 per game and 131 total rebounds in 2020-21. Her 131 rebounds were 15 more than the next closest Shocker, which was Trajata Colbert with 116. Bastin has been one of the program's best rebounders since she arrived in 2018. She has 568 career rebounds, far and away the team's active leader. She has averaged 4.6 rebounds or more every season, including her career best 7.7 in 2020-21.
