WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State snapped a four-game losing streak with a 58-47 win over SMU Saturday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.
Wichita State (12-11, 3-7) put four in double figures and held SMU to 3-of-13 beyond the arc, while outrebounding the Mustangs by 13. The Shockers turned a three-point deficit heading into the final quarter into an 11-point victory.
Mariah McCully finished with a team-high 13 points to go with six rebounds and four assists.
Asia Strong scored eight of her 12 points before halftime and
Trajata Colbert scored nine of her 11 after halftime.
Jane Asinde registered her seventh double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Both teams traded runs of 6-0 and 7-0 in the first five-plus minutes until SMU took its largest lead of 18-11 with 1:41 left in the period. The Shockers would then hold the Mustangs scoreless for the final 1:41 and score the final six points to make it 18-17 after 10 minutes.
McCully spearheaded the run with four points followed by a pair of
Seraphine Bastin free throws.
The second quarter wasn't exactly an offensive clinic, as the two teams combined for three points over the first 7:00. Strong finally recorded the first points of the period with 2:45 remaining on an offensive rebound putback.
Strong would then cash in back-to-back three-pointers to cap a personal 8-0 scoring run to end the half, giving Wichita State a 25-23 lead.
Wichita State upped its lead to six right out of the locker room, but field goals would be hard to come by the rest of the quarter. The Shockers were held without a make from the field for the final 7:24, allowing SMU to retake the lead, 39-36.
Behind four points from Colbert, Wichita State began the final quarter on a 9-2 run to go back in front, 45-41. A lead they would never relinquish.
The Shockers would go on to out-score SMU 22-8 in the final 10 minutes and close the game on an 8-0 run.
