Wichita State Aims to End Losing Streak vs. SMU

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State hosts SMU for its annual Pink Game on Saturday in Charles Koch Arena.

LAST TIME OUT
Wichita State dropped its fourth straight game following a 61-59 loss in overtime at East Carolina Wednesday night. Wichita State is now 2-2 in overtime games under Keitha Adams. Wichita State shot 58 percent from the floor in the first half to build a 13-point halftime lead, but the second half was a different story. Wichita State was 5-for-38 (13%) on field goal tries. Asia Strong led the Shockers with 15 points but was just 4-of-13 from the field. Strong was efficient at the free throw line, going 7-for-8. Nhug Bosch Duran tied a season high with 12 points behind a season-best four three-pointers. Mariah McCully added 10 points and six rebounds and Seraphine Bastin pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go with seven points and six assists.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
Led by first-year head coach Toyelle Wilson, SMU is 11-8 and 5-2 in American play this season. The Mustangs are powered by Florida State transfer Savannah Wilkinson. Wilkinson averages a double-double with 15.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Her 12 double-doubles lead the American and rank 18th nationally. Wilkinson also pulls down 8.2 defensive rebounds a game, good for eighth in the NCAA. Kayla White adds 13.8 points and Sydne Wiggins rounds out the double figure scorers at 10.9 per game. Jasmine Smith dishes out nearly five assists per game to go with team highs in steals (31) and blocks (22).

THE SERIES VS. SMU
Wichita State and SMU have met 10 times prior to Wednesday's matchup with the series being split at five games apiece. The Shockers are 3-1 all-time vs. SMU in Wichita. Wichita State swept the first regular season series in 2018, splitting in 2019 and SMU sweeping a season ago. SMU's win in Charles Koch Arena in 2020 was its first-ever win in Wichita.

LAST MEETING
SMU completed the season sweep with a 72-67 win over Wichita State on Feb. 19, 2020 in Charles Koch Arena. After trailing by seven at halftime, Wichita State dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 28-14. The Shockers went into the fourth quarter leading by seven only to see SMU win the period, 20-8. Wichita State missed 17-of-21 attempts from three-point range and shot 37.9 percent overall, while SMU made more than 50 percent of its field goals from the field and three-point range. Mariah McCully scored a game-high 19 points and Carla Bremaud added 14 behind four three-pointers.

BASTIN'S BACK      
Junior point guard Seraphine Bastin returned to the line up on Feb. 6 vs. Tulsa after missing four straight games due injury. Bastin came off the bench for the first time in her career and chipped in 12 points and five rebounds in 19 minutes. With her out of the lineup Wichita State lost the rebound battle in all four games.

WANTED FOR THEFT
Wichita State senior guard Mariah McCully has been pest on defense for opposing offenses through 21 games this season. McCully had her streak of 14 straight games with a steal  snapped vs. UCF, but has swiped at least one in 19 of the 21 games she's played. She's had multiple in 13 of the 21. Her 42 steals easily lead the team and rank sixth in the American Athletic Conference. Her 2.00 steals per game also rank sixth in the conference. During her first season at Wichita State (2019-20), McCully had a career-long 19-game streak with a steal, including a career-high seven at Tulane on Feb. 16, 2020.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING      
Wichita State is ranked in the top 100 nationally in nine categories after the first 22 games. The Shockers rank No. 10 in offensive rebounds per game (16.0), No. 12 in rebounds per game (43.59), No. 13 in total rebounds (959), No. 61 in field goal percentage defense (37.0), No. 65 in rebound margin (5.0), No. 65 in blocks (89), No. 74 in blocked shots per game (4.0), No. 75 in free throw percentage (74.2), and No. 87 in in steals (193).

GLASS CLEANERS
Wichita State is off to an impressive start rebounding the basketball through its first 22 games. The Shockers have outrebounded all but seven teams and currently average 43.6 rebounds a game, which ranks 12th nationally. Their 959 total rebounds rank 13th in the NCAA. Wichita State ranks 10th in offensive rebounds per game and 65th in rebound margin. As it stands now, Four different Shockers pull down at least 5.7 boards per game, led by Jane Asinde at 8.9.

DYNAMIC POINT GUARD
• Wichita State point guard Seraphine Bastin had her best season in a Shocker uniform in 2020-21. Bastin averaged 10.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.3 steals a game, while shooting 78.7 percent from the free throw line. The 5-foot-8 guard led the team in rebounding, assists, steals and double-doubles. In The American, Bastin ranked second in free throw percentage, third in assists, fourth in rebounding and fifth in assist-turnover ratio.

• She is off to another great start on the glass in 2021-22. Her 7.2 rebounds rank second on the team, and she's already had five games with 10 boards. In all but three games she's had five or more rebounds. Her season low is two.

• Bastin entered the Wichita State top 10 list for career assists on Nov. 26 vs. Alcorn State. She passed Allison Daniel who held the No. 10 spot with 308 career dimes. She has since moved into sole possession of 7th. Bastin is already in the top 10 for career assists per game at 3.8. Her 3.8 helpers rank ninth best in school history.

• The Dinant, Belgium, native has a bulldog mentality and that is evident in her rebounding. Bastin led Wichita State and ranked sixth in the American Athletic Conference in rebounding at 7.7 per game and 131 total rebounds in 2020-21. Her 131 rebounds were 15 more than the next closest Shocker, which was Trajata Colbert with 116. Bastin has been one of the program's best rebounders since she arrived in 2018. She has 489 career rebounds, far and away the team's active leader. She has averaged 4.6 rebounds or more every season, including her career best 7.7 in 2020-21.
