SCENE SETTERS:
- Wichita State heads to the east coast for matches at East Carolina on Friday night and Temple on Sunday afternoon. The Shockers swept both foes at home to open the 2022 conference slate.
- The Shockers have a combined all-time record of 14-2 against East Carolina and Temple, highlighted by an 8-0 mark against the Pirates. Both losses came in Philadelphia in consecutive seasons (2018 and 2019).
- The Shockers split a pair of matches at home this past weekend, sweeping South Florida before falling in four sets to nationally ranked UCF. Wichita State became just the third team to take a set this season against the Knights, joining Houston and Tulsa.
- Wichita State picked up 18.0 blocks over the course of seven sets last weekend (2.57 per set), moving them into second place in The American in that category. Four Shockers (Morgan Stout, Lauren McMahon, Natalie Foster and Sophia Rohling) average better than 0.80 blocks per set.
- Brylee Kelly has produced a kills-digs double-double in two of her last three matches (at Tulane, Oct. 23 and vs. UCF, Oct. 30). The redshirt junior entered 2022 with one double-double in her career but has delivered four this season.
- Middle blocker Natalie Foster has climbed up to third in The American in hitting percentage (.349) on the strength of an outstanding stretch that has seen her hit .411 over the last four matches. On Friday against UCF she became the first Shocker this season with double-digit kills and no attack errors (11-0-18, .611).
- The Shockers RPI dropped three spots to its present rank of 76. Wichita State trails Houston (13), UCF (19) and SMU (55) among teams in The American.
LOOKING BACK:
- Wichita State swept South Florida (25-15, 25-19, 25-7) before falling to #25-ranked UCF (25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 16-25).
- The Shockers attacking trio of middle Natalie Foster, outside hitter Brylee Kelly and opposite Sophia Rohling all reached double-figure kills in both outings after doing so just once in the first 20 matches of the season.
- Rohling was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor for the second time this season on Monday after hitting a combined .378 against the Bulls and Knights.
- Filling in for the injured Lily Liekweg at libero, sophomore Lara Uyar delivered a career-high 14 digs against UCF.
- Wichita State hit a season-best .353 on Friday against South Florida. The Shockers also posted a season-best .738 (31-42) sideout percentage.
- The seven points scored by South Florida in the third set was the fewest an opponent has mustered in a set (not including fifth sets) since the Shockers downed Evansville 25-7 in the second set on November 19, 2016.
- Friday was only the second time that Wichita State has held an American Athletic Conference foe to single digits. WSU beat Houston 25-8 on October 8, 2017.
- Wichita State had a perfect sideout percentage (7-for-7) in the third set, the second time they've accomplished the feat this season (5th set vs. Memphis on October 7).
- South Florida took a 1-0 lead in the opening set and did not lead again for the remainder of the match. The Shockers scored the first point of sets two and three and never relinquished the lead in either frame.
WSU-EAST CAROLINA SERIES:
- The Shockers have never lost to East Carolina, leading the all-time series 8-0 over the course of eight matches split evenly between Wichita and Greenville.
- Wichita State swept the Pirates on September 25 in Charles Koch Arena, but the Shockers had to work for it in a thrilling opening set that saw six consecutive set points denied.
- East Carolina's Angeles Alderete had ten kills in the first set, tied for the most by an Shocker opponent in a set this season.
SCOUTING THE PIRATES:
- The Pirates enter the weekend with an overall record of 8-16, including 3-9 in American Athletic Conference play. East Carolina needs just two more wins to surpass their 9-20 mark from a season ago.
- ECU picked up wins against Furman and Norfolk State at their home tournament to open the season, then added a pair of W's against Navy and Old Dominion in Norfolk before wrapping up the Virginia Tournament with a victory over Mercer.
- East Carolina's offense ranks down near the bottom of the AAC in several major offensive categories, including kills per set (11.35) and assists per set (10.36). The Pirates do not have any individual hitters in the top ten of the conference in hitting percentage.
- The Pirates supplement a lack of conventional scoring prowess with excellent serving numbers and a strong block. East Carolina is third on the circuit in service aces per set (1.51) and third in blocks per set (2.24), just 0.01 behind second place Wichita State.
- Head coach Adler Augustin is now in his third season at the helm of the Pirates following a stint as an assistant at Stephen F. Austin.
WSU-TEMPLEÂ SERIES:
- The Shockers and Owls have met eight times in program history, all since Wichita State joined the American Athletic Conference in 2017. WSU leads the all-time series 6-2 after sweeping Temple on September 23 in Wichita.
- Wichita State held the Owls to a .000 hitting percentage in the meeting earlier this season at Charles Koch Arena, the lowest mark by any Shocker opponent this season.
- Six different Shockers recorded three or more kills in the win, led by Brylee Kelly's nine.
- The Owls were the first-ever opponent for the Shockers in The American, putting up arguably the stiffest test for any conference opponent that season as WSU went undefeated in the AAC at 17-0. Temple pushed two different sets into extra points, but Mikaela Raudsepp's career-high 23 kills proved to be the difference.
SCOUTING THEÂ OWLS:
- After struggling to a 7-24 campaign a season ago, Temple has already surpassed their previous win total with a 9-14 (3-9) record entering play on Friday. The Owls have one common opponent with the Shockers, falling in straight sets against then-20th-ranked Kansas in early September.
- Head coach Linda Hampton-Keith is in her first season in Philadelphia, succeeding longtime Owls head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. Hampton-Keith comes to Temple after a successful stint as an assistant coach at Louisville, where she helped the Cardinals reach the 2021 NCAA Final Four. She also has previous head coach experience at North Carolina State.
- The Owls lean heavily upon the scoring prowess of outside hitter Taylor Davenport, whose 4.21 points per set are 1.52 more than the next closest Temple player. Wichita State forced Davenport into a season-worst -.167 hitting percentage in the first meeting.
- Former AAC Libero of the Year Falanika Danielson is coming off a season-high 26 digs in a five-set victory over Tulane. Peyton Boyd also turned in a highlight performance, racking up 20 kills and 15 digs in the Owls second five-set win over the Green Wave this season.
UP NEXT:
- The Shockers return home for their final Friday-Sunday homestand of the season, hosting Tulane and Houston at Charles Koch Arena.
