WICHITA, Kan. -- #24 UCF hit .395 as a team and got 15 kills from All-American McKenna Melville to defeat Wichita State 25-16, 25-14, 25-16 on Sunday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena.
The Shockers (7-7) scored the first point of the match on a kill from
Brylee Kelly, but after scoring the next two points UCF (12-0) did not trail the rest of the way. Wichita State pulled within 14-11 later in the first set after a UCF attack error, but the Knights scored eight of the next 11 to restore their cushion. A Kari Zumach kill put the finishing touches on an opening set win.
The Knights fired off a quick 6-0 run early in the second set to seize command, turning a 2-2 tie into an 8-2 lead. They eventually stretched the lead to 21-8, and Zumach again provided the winner as UCF took a 2-0 lead.
A pair of
Natalie Foster service aces had the Shockers within 13-11 midway through the third set, but the Knights took eight of the next nine points to stake themselves to a 20-12 lead that proved too much for the Shockers to overcome. Freshman
Emerson Wilford recorded her first home kill late in the set, part of a 3-0 run that made it 22-16, but UCF scored the final three points to continue their undefeated season.
Kelly led the Shockers with 12 kills, hitting .258, while
Sophia Rohling added eight. Wichita State was held to a .136 hitting percentage for the day.
The Shockers continue the homestand on Friday night against Memphis. First serve from Charles Koch Arena is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
