The Wichita State women's tennis team opened its spring season with wins over Saint Louis and Newman on Saturday on the Wichita Country Club indoor courts.
 
The Shockers (2-0) took care of SLU in the opener, 5-2, winning the doubles point and four of their six singles matches. They swept Newman, 7-0, in the nightcap.
 
Natsumi Kurahashi won 24 of her 29 games at No. 1 singles. The trio of LingWei Kong (No. 2 singles), Harriett Hamilton (No. 5) and Clara Whitaker (No. 6) did likewise, each finishing 2-0 while winning all four sets.
 
Whitaker and Jessie Zheng paired for two victories at No. 2 doubles. Kurahashi won both of her matches on court No. 1 – the first with Dohee Lee and the second with Kong.
 
The Shockers hit the road next weekend for matches at Drake (Saturday, Jan. 29, 11 a.m.), Omaha (Sunday, Jan. 30, 9:30 a.m.) and South Dakota (Monday, Jan. 31, 10 a.m.).
 
Their next home action is Friday, Feb. 11 (8 a.m.) against Florida Atlantic at the Wichita Country Club.
