WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State men's tennis team served up their season with two-straight home wins against Saint Louis and Oral Roberts, only dropping one point on the day.
 
"It's good to get the two wins to start the season off," head coach Danny Bryan said. "Everyone won their matches, and we only lost one at court one. Nico has been in and out of practice for the last couple weeks, so he wasn't timing the ball as well as he can, and I think this match is going to really help him for tomorrow."
 
The Shockers started the day strong, shutting out SLU in the first match. They clinched the doubles point with definitive wins at two and three by Jackie Lin/Orel Ovil and Alex Richards/Kristof Minarik. Court one completed the doubles sweep as Luka Mrsic and Nicolas Acevedo followed up with a 6-2 victory.
 
Wichita State carried that momentum into singles with Richards' shutout win at No. 6 kicking things off. Minarik and Mrsic added their own swift victories, dropping just four games between the two of them to clinch the match for the Shockers. Ovil made his No. 1 singles debut, shutting down his SLU opponent with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
 
In match two against Oral Roberts, the Shockers came out swinging again, sweeping the doubles to go up 1-0. Minarik wasted no time at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win. Mrsic and Lin also won in straight sets to clinch the match for Wichita State. Lo won definitely at No. 6 and Ovil battled to a 7-5 victory at No. 2. Acevedo fought back in the second set at No. 1 after being down 5-0, but ultimately fell to ORU's Volodymyr Zakharov.
 
The Shockers are back at it tomorrow with a 1 p.m. match against Purdue.
 
"We're excited," Bryan said. "It's going to be a test for sure. Purdue's got a lot of really good players. They've already played some really tough matches, so I'm sure they're going to be playing pretty well. We'll have a better idea of where we're at after the match tomorrow."
