WICHITA – A sleepy start doomed Wichita State Saturday morning in an eventual four-set loss to Wyoming at Charles Koch Arena. Set scores were 25-14, 25-14, 20-25 and 25-16 in favor of the visiting Cowgirls.
Just over 12 hours removed from a five-set win over South Dakota, WSU (6-2) struggled to find a spark. The Shockers hit .091 and .000 in each of the first two sets against Wyoming.
WSU regrouped to win the third set, out-hitting the Cowgirls .368 to .175 but couldn't sustain the momentum. The teams were knotted at 12 in the fourth set before Wyoming closed the match on a 13-4 tear.
Brylee Kelly led the Shockers with 13 kills and 10 digs.
Lauren Phillips finished with a team-high 22 assists, and
Lily Liekweg added 17 digs.
Teresa Garza paced Wyoming (7-4) with 12 kills and just one error.
The Cowgirls outhit the Shockers .255 to .106 and won the dig column, 69-63. Both sides had eight blocks.
Wyoming had 11 service aces to WSU's two. Garza (6) and Jackie McBride (4) combined for 10 of those aces.
WSU is back in action later this evening against No. 18 Creighton in the final match of the 2021 Shocker Volleyball Classic, Presented by Aspen Heights.
