WICHITA, Kan. – No. 23 Wichita State managed just a single run and only two hits in game one of the series vs. USF, as the Bulls pulled out a slim 2-1 win at Wilkins Stadium Friday afternoon.
Wichita State (32-7-1, 14-2-1) tied a season high, striking out 10 times at the plate against the conference's top pitcher, Georgina Corrick. Corrick carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth until
Sydney McKinney's infield single broke it up.
Addison Barnard's RBI triple in the next at bat was the only other hit for the Shockers in the game.
Bailey Lange (16-4) pitched a great game on the other side, allowing only five hits and the two runs. Unfortunately, the offense wasn't able to produce any run support.
With two outs in the top of the first, USF used a solo home run to take the early lead. They would add one more in the top of the fifth, which proved to be the deciding run.
After Barnard's RBI triple in the sixth, the Shockers were in prime position to tie or take the lead. With only one out and a runner at third, the Shockers brought
Madison Perrigan and
Neleigh Herring to the plate, but were retired on a foul out and strikeout.
One last opportunity came in the bottom of the seventh when
Bailee Nickerson and
Lauren Mills worked their way on base. An inning ending lineout double play would put an end to the comeback attempt.
