Shockers Clinch Series with Doubleheader Sweep of Memphis

MEMPHIS – Wichita State clinched another series win after sweeping Friday's doubleheader with Memphis by scores of 6-2 and 6-5.

Wichita State (23-5, 6-1) won its fourth straight game despite almost giving up a three-run lead in the sixth inning of the nightcap.

Erin McDonald (8-1) took the circle in game one of the day and threw a complete game, allowing just two runs on four hits, while striking out six.

Ryleigh Buck provided the offensive firepower with two home runs and three RBI. It was her second multi-home run game of the season.

Memphis jumped out to a 1-0 lead behind a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first, but it would be short-lived. The Shockers' very first batter in the top of the second, Buck, pounced on the first pitch and delivered a solo shot to dead center.

Neither offense was able to produce any runs until the top of the sixth when the Shockers grabbed the lead, 4-1. Back-to-back bases loaded walks from Kaylee Huecker and Jessica Garcia, followed by an infield single from McKinney led to a three-run inning.

The Tigers second solo home run of the game cut it to 4-2 after six innings. Buck added a little insurance with her two-run shot in the top of the seventh.

In the nightcap, Memphis again scored first this time with a pair of runs on a double and fielder's choice.

Wichita State had the makings of a big inning in the third, but managed only one run on a bases loaded walk from Neleigh Herring.

The Shockers broke through with four runs in the top of the fourth behind McKinney's RBI double, Addison Barnard's RBI single and the final run on an error. For the second straight inning Wichita State left the bases loaded.

With two outs in the sixth, Wichita State was an out away from a 1-2-3 inning, but a double, followed by an error led to a game-tying two-run home run.

Bailee Nickerson wasted no time giving the Shockers the lead. She belted the second pitch out of the park to make it 6-5.

Bailey Lange came in and struck out the side despite allowing two baserunners via wild pitch on a strikeout and a hit by pitch to earn her third save of the season. Caitlin Bingham (4-1) registered the win in 6.0 innings. She allowed five runs, though only two were earned, on six hits and five walks.

McKinney extended her multi-hit streak to seven straight after a 2-for-3 night with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
