TUCSON, Ariz. – Ryan Stuempfig,
Tommy Barnhouse and
Aaron Haase combined to throw five scoreless innings in relief, and
Ross Cadena drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in the seventh inning as the Wichita State University baseball team took down the 13th-ranked Arizona Wildcats, 10-9, Friday evening, March 12, at Hi Corbett Field.

The victory improves the Shockers to 7-4 on the season and snaps Arizona's 10-game winning streak, dropping the Wildcats to 11-3 overall.

Stuempfig, a redshirt sophomore right-hander from Flower Mound, Texas, improved to 2-0 on the mound this season after entering the game in the bottom of the fifth and firing three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits on 51 pitches with two strikeouts and a walk, while Barnhouse tossed a scoreless eighth inning with a pair of Ks.

A sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, Haase earned his team-best third save of 2021 after retiring the Wildcats in order in the bottom of the ninth inning, sealing the Wichita State win.

With the Shockers trailing, 9-8, entering the top of the seventh inning,
Corrigan Bartlett led-off the inning with a single to right, before advancing to second on a one-out balk from Arizona pitcher Ian Churchill.

A ground-out from
Couper Cornblum moved Bartlett over the third, before the Wildcat's fifth error of the game allowed him to score the tying run and
David VanVooren to reach first, bringing Cadena to the plate.

He belted an 0-2 pitch to left field for a double, scoring VanVooren all the way from first base to give Wichita State the 10-9 advantage.

Cadena paced WSU at the plate for the game, going 2-for-3 with three runs driven in and a double, while Bartlett added a pair of hits, extending his team-best hitting streak to 11 games.

Arizona outhit Wichita State, 10-8, but committed five errors compared to only two for the Shockers.

Brandon Boissiere went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI, pacing the Wildcats offensively.

Arizona reliever Vince Vannelle (2-1) suffered the loss on the mound after giving up one unearned run on one hit with one strikeout and a walk in 1 2/3 innings.
The Shockers are scheduled to wrap up the series with the Wildcats Saturday, March 13, at 7 p.m. CT (6 p.m. MST). WSU will also face the Air Force Falcons in a neutral site contest Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. CT (noon MST), prior to facing Arizona.
