Turnovers Haunt Shockers in Loss at ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Wichita State committed 34 turnovers and was outscored 30-11 in the third quarter, leading ECU to a 74-59 win Saturday afternoon in Minges Coliseum.

Wichita State (4-10, 1-8) held ECU to 36 percent shooting, but could not make up for the miscues on offense. Wichita State's 34 turnovers are the second most in the Keitha Adams era and a season high.

Asia Strong continued her offensive tear, going for a game-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting. She has scored 10 or more points in nine straight games, while also registering her third 20-point outing of the season. Strong's seven rebounds were tied for a team high with DJ McCarty, who set a new career best.

The Shockers finished the game shooting 48 percent from the field and won the rebound battle by five.

ECU (7-11, 5-8) was paced by Lashonda Monk's 18 points, while Taniyah Thompson added 16.

The start couldn't have been much better for Wichita State, as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead behind baskets from Strong, Trajata Colbert and a three-pointer from Carla Bremaud. ECU answered with a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the game.

After ECU climbed out the early six-point hole, the Pirates went cold missing their next eight attempts. ECU finished the quarter just 3-of-15 from the field, while Wichita State was 6-for-10. Turnovers kept Wichita State from leading by a lot more, as the Shockers committed nine first quarter miscues.

When Wichita State wasn't turning it over, they were scoring at ease behind nearly 65 percent shooting near the midway point of the second quarter. Back-to-back transition scores from Strong gave Wichita State a 19-13 lead.

That six-point margin slowly dwindled as the quarter went on. Over the final 2:53, the Shockers went scoreless allowing ECU to tie the game at 26 at the half.

Strong was the only scoring threat for Wichita State in the half, accounting for 14 of the team's 26 points on 6-of-7 shooting. The rest of the team was 5-for-17 from the field. ECU shot just 24 percent from the field, but forced 16 Wichita State turnovers.

Turnovers continued to haunt the Shockers to begin the third quarter. ECU grabbed its largest lead to that point, 35-28, behind a 9-2 run thanks to five turnovers in the first 3:08. A bucket from Strong briefly broke the run, only to see the Pirates force consecutive turnovers to push the margin to 10, forcing a Keitha Adams timeout with 5:45 left in the frame.

ECU's lead ballooned to as many as 19 in the third, as they outscored Wichita State 30-11 in the period and led 56-37 after 30 minutes.

Wichita State outscored the Pirates in the final period, 22-18, but never got closer than 14.
