Wichita State can add another name to its NBA wall.
Â
2020 graduate Jaime Echenique has signed a 10-day contract with the Washington Wizards via the NBA Hardship Exception provision, the club announced Thursday evening.
Â
The 6-foot-11 Barranquilla native is poised to become the first Columbian ever to appear in an NBA regular season game.
Â
He's the seventh WSU product to make an active roster since 2013, joining Gal Mekel (2013), Toure' Murry (2013), Cleanthony Early (2014), Ron Baker (2016), Fred VanVleet (2016) and Landry Shamet (2018).
Â
Echenique has played in 14 games this year for the Wizards' G-League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go, averaging 12.6 points and 9.2 rebounds on .554 shooting. He's tallied six double-doubles and currently ranks third on the league leaderboard with 25 blocks.
Â
Echenique played two seasons for the Shockers after transferring from Trinity Valley Junior College, earning second team all-conference honors as a senior. He averaged 10.1 points and 6.4 rebounds while totaling 94 blocks (ninth on WSU's career list).
Â
Echenique played overseas in Spain during the 2020-21 season but parlayed a strong showing with the Wizards' 2021 NBA Summer League squad into a preseason contract and a G-League audition.
Â
A total of 18 former WSU players have played in the NBA, including 14 who finished out their collegiate careers in a Shocker jersey. Echenique would be the 15
th, joining active players Landry Shamet (Suns) and Fred VanVleet (Raptors).
