LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wichita State overcame the highest altitude in college basketball to earn a hard-fought 57-48 win over Wyoming Saturday afternoon at Arena-Auditorium.
Wichita State (2-0) picked up its first non-conference road win since Nov. 20, 2019, when they defeated Louisiana Tech, 88-80.
Asia Strong was the lone Shocker in double figures with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting to go with seven rebounds. For the second straight game,
Seraphine Bastin led the way on the glass, grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds. She just missed a double-double with nine points.
Jane Asinde added nine boards of her own.
Wichita State overcame a slow start shooting the ball but finished at 37 percent overall and 7-of-20 from downtown. The defense was impressive again, holding the Cowgirls to 31 percent and just 5-of-24 from three-point distance.
McKinley Bradshaw led all scorers with 22 points for Wyoming.
A sluggish opening 10 minutes saw the Cowgirls lead 13-6 behind back-to-back three-pointers late in the quarter. The 6-0 spurt forced an early Wichita State timeout with 3:39 remaining. After the timeout neither team would score the rest of the period.
Wyoming led 15-8 with 7:48 left in the half, but the Shockers closed on a 12-4 run to take a 20-19 lead into the locker room.
Both teams struggled on the offensive end, combining for 5-for-25 from three-point range. Neither team hit the 30 percent mark from the field. Wyoming's nine first half turnovers also allowed Wichita State to erase a seven-point deficit.
Strong's seven points in the half led the Shockers, while McKinley Bradshaw tallied a game-high nine for Wyoming.
A
Carla Bremaud corner trey, followed by a
Trajata Colbert layup, Wichita State scored the first five points of the second half to take a 25-19 lead. The Cowgirls scored seven of the next nine points to climb back within a point at 27-26.
Colbert added a layup and a free throw and then
Shamaryah Duncan's deep triple gave Wichita State a 37-31 lead after three quarters.
The opening possession of the fourth quarter resulted in a Strong three-pointer, giving Wichita State its largest lead to that point, 40-31. The Shockers upped the lead to double digits for the first time in the game at the 6:48 mark.
Wichita State never let the Cowgirls threaten down the stretch, leading by as many as 12 in the final minutes.
