HEAD COACH GREGG MARSHALL ON…
…Opening statement:
"That's basketball man. It's cruel sometimes. Great play by them at the end to win the game, obviously we didn't want to foul, we didn't want them to come off the three-point shooters, we just had to try and contest and he made a great play. We had a lot of great plays right before that to take the lead. I thought Dexter's play to get the offensive rebound and eventually get the three in the corner was one of my favorite plays in the game. (Grant) Sherfield made a beautiful play at the end of the game to hit the three and give us the lead. We won most the statistical categories other than (at) the free throw line and we didn't play good enough defense. They are a heck of a team and did some great things."
…Cincinnati double-teaming Jaime late in the game:
"Yeah I haven't seen them double all year. That's a testament to Jaime and the quality of play he's putting forth right now. They did a very good job of doubling him in the second half. They weren't doubling him early and he ends up going 9-for-19, with 19 points, 11 rebounds, another double-double, and just played really really well and did a better job of handling the double team after the first or second time."
…taking the positives away from a loss like this:
"Losing two games in a row like that is really tough so I'll have to do what I can to get the guys up for the next one because the season keeps coming at you, and it comes at you fast."
…erasing the deficit late in the game:
"We just got stops. I don't recall every possession, but we limited them to only one shot and we pushed it pretty hard. We had two point guards in there with Jamarius (Burton) and Grant (Sherfield) and we pushed it pretty hard. Jamarius got to the rim one time, I think we got it to Jaime (Echenique) and then Dexter (Dennis) got the offensive rebound and hit the three and Grant ended up with the three to give us the lead."
…sophomore guard Dexter Dennis' clutch three at the end:
"That was a big time play athletically to go get the ball, and I don't how he got the ball in the corner. I think there was a couple of passes, but it was just a very athletic play."
…if sophomore guard Erik Stevenson was the first look on the final play:
"No. we had three looks and then he was the fourth look and they did a good job of defending it. We didn't get the ball quite far enough down unfortunately to burn the timeout. It would have better on half-court or on our side of half-court, but that's where the ball was so we had plenty of time to get a shot. We had other options that they just took away."
…the recent success of senior center Jaime Echenique and Cincinnati's senior leadership:
"He's playing his heart out. He's playing like a senior. The difference is that they have a lot of seniors… I think five, and we have one. The experience factor played a part in that win so hopefully our guys with as many that are playing right now, I hope that they can get better and more experienced with the time that they are getting on the court.
SOPHOMORE GUARD JAMARIUS BURTON ON …
… how tough it is to lose when the team played well:
"Yeah it makes it tougher. We all went out there and played hard. We can learn from games like the past two. We were a few possessions behind and could have made another basket or gotten another stop. We can take this opportunity to learn."
… the feeling of coming close to a tie then giving up key baskets:
"Hats off to them. They're a very good team. They just scored at a great percentage tonight. We couldn't stop them tonight. They shot 55 percent. We were fighting trying to limit their scoring opportunities, but they took advantage of every situation they had. Down the stretch, they made big time plays at the end."
… Dexter Dennis' offensive rebound and corner three near the end of the game:
"He was playing at a high level all night. We needed him and he showed up big time, especially on that play. His tremendous effort showed. He got the rebound and he's a great 3-point shooter, so he shot it with confidence and put us in a position to win late in the game. We needed him and he showed up big time."
… the confidence of the team:
"For a good amount of games down the stretch, we haven't been able to put the ball in the basket. Today we were able to do so. We've got to get back to our calling card, which is defense and that has kept us in games. Hopefully, we can pair the offense and defense next game."
… if he feels like the team is close to playing at the highest level:
"Definitely. There are some things we need to clean up, whether it's on defense and offense. In the last two games, we've been a couple plays away from winning. All we can do is take them and learn from them. Hopefully we won't make the same mistakes and improve to keep going and give it our all."
SENIOR CENTER JAIME ECHENIQUE ON …
… how he feels after the game:
"Every loss is really tough, especially when you're giving your best. They are a really good team and never gave up. Everything was on the final possession. The other side is that these young guys kept pushing and battling. It's not like things are repeating. We competed. We made plays. We were shooting better. We were executing. Big time players make big time shots."
… his stats lately:
"I'm not pleased with anything. I don't expect to go in and put up those numbers. We go in and try to win. I don't even know what I'm averaging right now. I only see it if I read it online. I've never logged on to GoShockers.com and looked at my stats. I'm just an unselfish person and I'm helping my teammates go every night and go as hard as I can. I have a sense of urgency right now. This is my last year and my last chance. I've never gone to an NCAA Tournament, but I want to go. I want to enjoy the experience. We went to the NIT last year, but it wasn't the right tournament for us. This year I'm just trying to help them as much as I can and enjoy myself. Before that, we have to take care of some business and keep learning."
SOPHOMORE GUARD DEXTER DENNIS ON …
… what went through his mind before the final play:
"He got the ball at the top of the key. I knew he was going to do something, and I did what I could and apparently it wasn't enough. I think all night, defensively, I wasn't in tune. I gave up too many baskets. Normally that doesn't happen, but tonight it did."
… fighting back from down multiple possessions late in the second half:
"I think we just pulled together at once for the last 5-6 minutes, but we failed to do that for the first 30-35 minutes. I think that showed tonight. We didn't get enough stops tonight. Mainly from me, but we can learn from it and some point we've got to turn it around."
… Jaime Echenique's double-double performance:
"I think he's been saving us a lot. I think the guards haven't held our own in a lot of games. He's kept us in those games. Not just on offense, but on defense too. I remember a lot of times I've gotten blown by and he's been there to get a charge. He's been saving us and we need to help him."
