WICHITA, Kan. – No. 48 Wichita State got their second shutout victory of the day to advance to the Pacific Central Valley Championship finals, as they defeated the San Francisco Dons 4-0, at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, California.
The championship match will be held at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center tomorrow following a consolation match that will be played at 11 a.m. CT. It will be a Shockers versus Bulldogs final no matter what as the other semifinal match will be between the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Fresno State Bulldogs.
This match went back to the normal format of playing doubles first compared to their match earlier in the morning where they only played singles.
The Shockers took advantage of doubles play as
Elio Lago and
Orel Ovil cruised to a 6-2 victory on court three for their sixth win of the year. San Francisco answered on court two with a win 7-6 win in a very closely contested match with
Stefan Latinovic and
Benjamin Niv.
It all came down to court one where senior All-Americans
Murkel Dellien and
Marius Frosa were battling back-and-forth with the Dons. In the end, Dellien and Frosa proved why they are No. 27 in the country as they walked away with a 7-5 win and sealed the doubles point for WSU. This was the fifth win in a row for the duo.
After not playing being ale to complete his match against Pacific, you could tell Latinovic was itching for a win as he got a quick, 6-3, 6-1, straight set victory in flight four. This pushed the Shocker lead to two.
Lago, who didn't compete in the morning match, picked up his first win in flight two this season, 7-6, 6-1, to extend WSU's lead.
With the Shockers needing one more point to clinch, Dellien came up clutch on court one with a hard fought, 7-5, 6-4, straight set victory. Dellien has now won three in a row in singles play.
Freshman
Alex Richards was on the hunt for his second win of the day, winning his first 7-6, before his match was suspended in the second set. It would have been his fourth victorious effort in flight six had he won.
Ovil and Frosa both dropped their first sets before their matches were suspended. They both led in the second set before being stopped.
