POSTGAME QUOTE SHEET
WICHITA STATE 72, TEMPLE 69
THURSDAY, FEB. 27, 2020
WICHITA, KAN./ CHARLES KOCH ARENA (10,112)
GREGG MARSHALL, JAMARIUS BURTON, JAIME ECHENIQUE, TREY WADE

Head Coach GREGG MARSHALL on...

… Opening Statement:
"What a ballgame. Fits-and-starts, good runs, bad runs, pretty good runs, pretty bad runs. In the end, we win by three. It was a time to get up and display some character at the end. We were down five or six after being up six or seven, so we made the plays that we had to."

… his message when the team got down in the second half:
"The last time I sat down with them we were down four before calling some time outs at the end. Just dig deep, man. Our backs are against the wall. This is a very winnable game, but you're gonna have to get some stops, for sure. And we did."

… Jaime Echenique's performance:
"14 (points) and 13 (rebounds) is a pretty good night night. He was efficient: 6-for-11 (shooting). He was missing some early. He had a couple shots blocked, and they were really coming in hard to double0team him from the baseline side, which is a little unusual. You don't see that a whole lot. He made one nice pass to Trey (Wade) for a dunk and then he made another pass. He turned it over. He made a beautiful skip one time, I think, to Erik (Stevenson) for a jump shot."

… winning a close game after several close losses:
"It's much better than losing. I mean, it's a big difference of three points one way or the other. Law of averages says we're going to make some plays at some point down the stretch, and we did tonight."

… Wade's career night and putting him in the starting lineup
"I've liked his energy the last couple of games. He's been beating people down the floor. He's rebounded well. He's a big part of what we've done all year long, but he was not playing well. And I'm going to go with guys that are playing well. The guys that play well get a lot of minutes... I thought Trey deserved it tonight and he certainly delivered"

Junior Forward TREY WADE on…

…his great first half:
"I was just preparing for the shot. I was ready for my shot. I knew they were going to play off of me, since I've been shooting the ball badly, but I've just been preparing this whole time."

…finally winning a close game:
"It was a good push. It's going to be a confidence-booster and we have got to finish strong."

…his transition to Wichita State:
"It's tough just trying to get acclimated to everything and learning the plays, learning the teammates, and learning the coach. I just try to keep listening, that's the biggest thing."

Sophomore Guard JAMARIUS BURTON on…

…the turning point in the second half:
"Prior to this game tonight, we all knew that we needed this game at home. We only have two games left here, so down the stretch we were all confident in one another. We still had the fight and determination, and then down the stretch we just made plays and kept believing."

…the team's heart:
"It showed us that we can make plays down the stretch, as well. We've been in several ball games where we didn't make the plays that we needed to win the game. Today just shows that we can be in a tough game like this and come out with a better outcome. I'm glad that we got this win, and now we can be confident that we can pull off wins like this."

Senior Center JAIME ECHENIQUE on…

… Burton's layup to seal the game:
"He showed his athleticism and how he can finish around the rim. Somehow he read the defense and he took a smart decision to take it and lay it in."

…his second-to-last home game:
"It's been a crazy five years. I'm in a situation that I would have never expected. It made me so happy when I received that call and found out I was coming to the United States. It was kind of a special moment that determined where I am right now. It just makes me a little excited for what's to come."
