Wichita State, SMU Set to Tangle Wednesday Night

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State has two remaining home games in 2020, starting with a matchup against SMU on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday's game can be heard online at GoShockers.com/Listen with the voice of Shocker Women's Basketball Steve Strain calling the action. Strain is in his sixth season broadcasting games for the women's program. The game will also be televised locally on COX YurView (HD 2022) and streamed at YurView.com/Kansas.

LAST TIME OUT
Wichita State improved to 3-0 at Tulane since joining The American with a 69-68 win on Sunday. Wichita State swiped a season-high 17 steals and forced 26 Tulane turnovers - the second most this season. Mariah McCully scored a team-high 19 points to go with a career-high seven steals. McCully has scored 10 or more in 16 consecutive games. Maya Brewer knocked down the go-ahead three-pointer with 22 seconds left. She tallied 11 of her 15 points after halftime. Brewer also pulled down a career-high seven rebounds, while going 6-of-9 from the floor.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
SMU enters the matchup at 10-14 overall and 4-8 in league play. The Mustangs defeated Wichita State back on Jan. 29 in Dallas, 64-44. Johnasia Cash averages a near double-double with 10.5 points and 9.3 rebounds. Cash has nine double-doubles and her 9.3 boards per game rank third in the league. Kayla White leads the Mustangs in scoring at 10.9 per game. Reagan Bradley leads SMU in assists (106) and steals (45) to go with 9.4 points. Bradley's assist numbers are tops in The American. SMU pulls down 16.3 offensive rebounds a game, which tops The American and places them eighth nationally. The Mustangs average 42.2 rebounds per game, good for third in the conference and 25th in the country.

THE SERIES VS. SMU
Wichita State and SMU have met nine times prior to Wednesday's matchup. The Shockers are 3-0 all-time vs. SMU in Wichita, including 2-0 as members of The American. Wichita State will look to split the season series with the Mustangs after dropping the first meeting in 2020 at SMU. The two teams split the regular season series a season ago with the home team winning each matchup.

LAST MEETING
Wichita State was held to a season-low 44 points in round one at SMU, where the Mustangs ran away with a 64-44 win in Moody Coliseum. Wichita State has lost its last two contests at SMU by an average of 24.0 points. Wichita State hit just 32.1 percent of its field goal tries and 2-of-12 attempts from beyond the arc. The Shockers also committed 30 turnovers - six players had three or more turnovers. For the first time this season, Wichita State failed to have a player reach double figures in the scoring column. Seraphine Bastin had a team-high eight points and DJ McCarty added seven and three steals.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
Located in Dallas, Texas, Southern Methodist University has an enrollment of 11,739 as a member of the American Athletic Conference. SMU returns seven letterwinners and three starters off last year's squad that finished 11-19 and 5-11 in The American. The Mustangs were picked to finish 12th by the league's coaches in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Poll. Head Coach Travis Mays is in his fourth season at SMU with a career record of 45-59. Mays arrived on the Hilltop after 14 years as an assistant coach, where he served under three Hall of Fame coaches, and 11 years playing professionally. In his first season, Mays led the Mustangs to the third round of the WNIT with a pair of victories in the tournament, winning multiple postseason games for the second time in program history and the first since 1993. He guided the team to a 19-13 record overall, including a 13-3 mark in Moody Coliseum, the second-most home wins in program history.

SCHOOL RECORD GOES DOWN AT TEMPLE 
In Wichita State's 85-75 road win at Temple on Feb. 5, the Shockers knocked down a school record 15 three-pointers. The previous mark of 14 was set on Nov. 21, 1999 against Lamar. WSU also set season highs in 3FGA (27) and 3FG Pct. (55.6%) at Temple. Maya Brewer (5), Ashley Reid (5), DJ McCarty (3) and Shyia Smith (2) combined to make up the 15 treys.

MCCULLY NABS SECOND HONOR ROLL SELECTION 
Junior guard Mariah McCully picked up her second American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll selection on Monday, Feb. 17. McCully averaged 18.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 5.0 steals in Wichita State's two games last week against Memphis and Tulane. In her first game back after missing three straight due to injury, McCully scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed a season-best seven rebounds vs. Memphis. She went 9-for-13 at the free throw line, which were also season highs. To wrap up the week, she scored 19 points and swiped a season-high seven steals in the one-point win at Tulane.

DISH IT OUT
Wichita State handed out a season-high 21 assists at Temple on Feb. 5. Sophomore Seraphine Bastin had a season-high eight and senior Ashley Reid added six. The 21 assists were the most since dishing out 26 vs. Temple in Feb. 2018.

OH MY MARIAH
Junior Mariah McCully has been on a scoring tear for the Shockers this season. She has scored 10 or more in 16 consecutive games, and is averaging 14.8 points per game during the streak, including two 20-point outings. Her 17 games of 10 or more points this season rank first on the team and she is Wichita State's leading scorer on the year at 13.6 per game. The Shockers have three 20-point outings this season, two of which belong to McCully.

REBOUNDING IS THE KEY
When Wichita State wins the rebound battle, the outcome has been positive this season. The Shockers are 10-1 when winning the battle of the boards and 4-10 when they don't. In Wichita State's 14 wins this season, the Shockers are outrebounding their opponents by an average of 4.5 boards a game and grabbing 37.4 in those games. In the 11 losses, they average only 34.3 rebounds and are outrebounded by 5.6.

TURNOVER TULANE 
Wichita State set a season high with 17 steals and forced 26 turnovers - the second most this season. Wichita State has recorded 12 or more steals eight times this season. It was the 13th time forcing 20 or more turnovers. Mariah McCully was responsible for seven of the team's 17 steals - the most since TaQuandra Mike had seven against Northern Iowa on Jan. 1, 2017.
