Shockers Drop Back-and-Forth Affair with Tulane

WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State and Tulane went back-and-forth all game long, but it was Tulane that came out on top at the end, 61-56, handing the Shockers their second straight loss.

Wichita State (8-7, 0-2) dropped to 0-2 in league play for the second straight season and also saw its three-game win streak vs. the Green Wave come to an end.

Mariah McCully scored a team-high 13 points, extending her stretch of double-digit scoring to nine games. Over her last nine contests, the Grand Rapids, Michigan, native is averaging 15.1 points per game.

Seraphine Bastin neared double-double territory with nine points and seven rebounds. The sophomore guard also added three assists. Asia Henderson pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to go with six points.

Tulane outshot the Shockers, converting at a 41 percent clip compared to Wichita State's mark of 34 percent. The Green Wave also outrebounded Wichita State by a margin of 38-31.

Kayla Manuirirangi led all scorers with 14 points off the bench for the Green Wave. Sierra Cheatham and Krystal Freeman both added 12 points.

The Green Wave struck with the first big run, ending the first quarter on a 9-0 advantage, taking a 19-16 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter was fairly even, but Tulane went into the locker room with a 34-28 lead.

Wichita State came out of the locker room focused, as they erased the deficit and regained the lead behind a 9-2 run. They forced six turnovers in the first five minutes of the third quarter and forced a total of 26 turnovers in the game. WSU held Tulane to only seven points in the quarter.

A cold spell came at the wrong time, as Wichita State went only 4-of-16 from the field in the final frame. Tulane converted at the free throw line in the final minute to halt the Shockers' comeback bid.
