POSTGAME QUOTE SHEET
[rv/22] WICHITA STATE 54, HOUSTON 65
SATURDAY, JAN. 25, 2020
WICHITA, KAN./ CHARLES KOCH ARENA (10,398)
GREGG MARSHALL, DEXTER DENNIS, JAIME ECHENIQUE, GRANT SHERFIELD

Head Coach GREGG MARSHALL on…

…Opening Statement:
"Wow, that was a quite a game. We scored 87 points and they scored 79. I don't know when either team has scored that many points, but that's kind of game it was: back-and-forth. I thought we were pulling away there and then we got sloppy. They made some tremendous plays and shots and made it more of a game than I thought it would be at that time, but credit to them. A hard-fought win in conference and 17 wins (overall)."

…The team growing up throughout the season:
"We're pretty good. That's what I told (the players). We're pretty good, and that's kind of where we've maintained. We've maintained 'pretty good.' 17-3 is pretty good. We'll see where it goes. I don't know how we're going to continue to evolve and get better. We've been in neutral for a while, but we've got a lot of talent. A lot of kids that are quality individuals, but we have to buckle down and eliminate the silly mistakes."

…Getting win No. 17 (matching last year's regular season total):
"We're better. I mean, I've said that we're pretty good. We weren't pretty good at this time last year. We're pretty good, and we have to decide if that's good enough. Are we satisfied with pretty good? Because we have some things that we need to clean up and I've got to do a better job coaching and we've got to do a better job of absorbing coaching and making it a priority to improve."

Sophomore guard DEXTER DENNIS on...

... His double-double day:
"I think rebounding is mainly effort, just playing as hard as I can. I still took a couple plays off tonight. After I watch the film, everything will be alright."

... The team's growth from last year to this year:
"It feels great. But, at the same time, we can grow a lot more and I think that's what coach is ready for. That's what we're ready for, too. We just have to keep getting better. But what a difference a year can make, for sure."

Senior center JAIME ECHENIQUE on...

... Winning a gritty game:
"We just have to keep moving up and learn from our mistakes and then keep practicing and keep believing. I'm really glad we shared the ball, and we were really unselfish in that point. That's what gave us the win."

...Winning the rebounding battle:
"I think we did a really good job containing their bigs. They were really talented and then both of them got into foul trouble early. So, I think that that gave us an advantage and then we just kept attacking their small lineup."

Freshman guard GRANT SHERFIELD on...

... Learning the little details
"You learn a lot here. At the beginning of the year, I don't think I would have been able to make that play but the coaching in the film room and coach drilled it into me so I'm glad I'm able to make that play now."

...Sitting next to assistant coach Tyson Waterman during games (a former Marshall point guard):
"He helps a lot. Not just in beginning of games. Just going out to the film room with him and watching film and stuff like that. Coach Tyson helps me a lot and he's a reason for a lot of my success here."
