Colbert’s Game-Winner Ends Temple’s Win Streak

WICHITA, Kan. – Trajata Colbert received a pass from the sideline and scored the go-ahead layup with 3.9 seconds remaining to give Wichita State a 72-70 win over red-hot Temple.

Wichita State (11-7, 3-2) snapped Temple's five-game winning streak and used another second half comeback to pull off the victory. For the second straight game Wichita State faced a halftime deficit of at least eight points (trailed Tulsa by 13).

Mariah McCully continued her scoring outburst with a team-high 15 points, extending her streak of 10 or more to 12 consecutive games. Seraphine Bastin tallied her second straight game in double figures with 12 points to go with six rebounds and three assists. Shyia Smith added 12 points for her second game of 10 or more in league play.

The Shockers committed only 10 turnovers and converted 19-of-26 free throws to offset shooting 5-for-18 from beyond the arc and getting outrebounded 38-32. The free throw line was huge in the second half, where WSU went 14-of-16.

Mia Davis led all players with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Ashley Jones added 19 points and seven assists and Marissa Mackins scored 13 of her 15 points before halftime.

Maya Brewer's three-pointer from the left wing gave the Shockers their first lead nearly seven minutes in, 11-8. Temple would come right back with back-to-back Marissa Mackins triples to take a 16-13 lead into the second quarter.

Mackins' hot start carried into the second quarter, pushing the Owls to a 26-18 lead. She had half of Temple's points behind 5-of-6 shooting – three of which were beyond the arc. Wichita State missed a pair of free throws with 3:06 left that would have cut the deficit to seven only to see Temple come down on the ensuing possession to splash in a three to take its largest lead 37-25.

Five straight points cut it back to single digits and neither team would score again to end the half. Through 20 minutes of play Temple held a 38-30 lead behind 46 percent shooting and five three-pointers. The duo of Marissa Mackins (13) and Mia Davis (10) combined for 23 of the Owls' points.

Wichita State converted on only 34 percent of its field goal attempts, including a 3-of-9 mark from downtown. Bastin led the way with eight first-half points.

A 7-0 Wichita State run to begin the third quarter pulled the Shockers within three, 40-37. The lead continued to hover between 3-5 for much of the period until a pair of Bastin free throws pulled the Shockers within two. Wichita State was in position to tie or take the lead, but a turnover led to a Temple score on the other end to push it back to a four-point advantage.

McCully and Carla Bremaud took turns tying the game in the final 1:34 before Temple hit two free throws with 2.4 seconds on the clock to take a 57-55 lead into the fourth.

On the first possession of the final frame, Ashley Reid cashed in a three-pointer to give Wichita State a one-point lead only to see the Owls come right back with two straight scores.

The two teams traded the lead over the next three minutes with the Shockers regaining the lead following a McCully three-pointer to make it 66-64.

After Wichita State led by three at the 2:00 minute mark, Temple clawed back to tie the game at 70 with 50 seconds left. The Shockers came up empty with 20 seconds remaining, but the play of the game came when Temple gathered the rebound and looked to make the go-ahead score in transition. Bastin had other plans. She moved into position to draw a charge and 5.0 seconds remaining, giving WSU the ball and the opportunity to win it.

Out of a timeout, Wichita State executed a sideline out of bounds play to perfection. Colbert came off a screen in the lane where she grabbed the lob to score an uncontested layup, which turned out to be the game-winner.
