Three Former Shockers to Be Enshrined in KSHOF

WICHITA, Kan. – The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame (KSHOF) has announced the members of the Class of 2019, and three former Shocker standouts will be among the inductees who will be enshrined on Sunday, Oct. 6, at Kansas Star Casino.
 
Three-time Missouri Valley Conference basketball selection Warren Jabali, two-time All-American and 12-year Major League pitcher Mike Pelfrey, and two-time Missouri Valley Conference baseball honoree and nine-year MLB veteran Nate Robertson are the Shockers who will be inducted into the KSHOF.
 
Jabali, known as Warren Armstrong during his time at Wichita State from 1965-68, was a three-time first team All-Missouri Valley Conference honoree for the Shockers. He averaged a double-double as a sophomore and senior, and left WSU as the school's all-time leader in assists, while ranking second in rebounds and fourth in scoring. After his career as a Shocker, Jabali played seven seasons in the American Basketball Association (ABA), where he was a four-time All-Star while averaging 17.1 points, 5.3 assists and 6.7 rebounds for his professional tenure. He was named the ABA Rookie of the Year in 1969. Jabali was inducted into the Pizza Hut Shockers Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. His name is on the Kansas City (Mo.) Central High School gym.
 
Pelfrey, who pitched for Wichita State from 2003-05, was a two-time All-American (2004 and 2005) and Missouri Valley Pitcher of the Year. He was also a three-time first team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, and garnered Freshman All-American and Missouri Valley Freshman of the Year accolades in 2003. Pelfrey was also named Academic All-MVC in 2004, and was a three-year letterwinner at WSU. He capped his collegiate career in 2005 with a program record 2.18 ERA, which still ranks second in program history, and 366 strikeouts, which is also still second on the career records list. Pelfrey posted a combined record of 33-7 at Wichita State, before being drafted in the first round of the 2005 MLB Draft by the New York Mets. He played 12 seasons in the majors with the Mets, Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox, posting a 4.68 ERA with 838 strikeouts in 275 career games. Pelfrey was named to the MVC All-Centennial Team in 2007. He was inducted into the Pizza Hut Shockers Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame in 2018, and the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019. In his high school career at Wichita Heights, he was a member of the state runner-up team in 2001. 
 
Robertson was a three-year letterwinner and two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference pitcher for the Shockers from 1997-1999. He posted two undefeated seasons on the mound at Wichita State, going 5-0 with 52 strikeouts and a 2.78 ERA in 1997 and 8-0 with 77 Ks and a 4.13 ERA in 1999. Robertson was drafted in the fifth round of the 1999 MLB Draft by the Florida Marlins, and played nine professional seasons with the Marlins, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies. In the majors, he compiled a 5.01 ERA with 775 strikeouts in 223 career games. In his high school tenure at Maize High School, he set a state record for ERA at 0.79 and helped lead the Eagles to a state runner-up showing in 1993. He was named the Kansas High School Player of the Year in in 1995. Robertson also won three NBC Tournaments, two with the El Dorado Broncos in 1996 and 1998, and one with Kansas Stars in 2017. He was inducted into the El Dorado Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016.
