WICHITA, Kan. – Shocker duo
Marta Bellucco and
Fatima Bizhukova have been selected to the 2019 NCAA Doubles Championship with an at-large bid. The duo makes the 32-team draw and will compete May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Â
All matches at the Championship will be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.
Â
For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60 eligible/entered doubles teams, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All doubles teams must have started a minimum of 10 doubles matches, with a minimum of four matches in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
Â
Bellucco and Bizhukova become the fourth duo to compete at the NCAA Doubles Championship, and the first since Stephanie Dalmacio and Delia Damaschin in 2010. Sandy Sadler and Jill Braendle competed in 1984 and 1985 and JoEllen Walker and Lisa Field in 1995. Sadler and Braendle reached the round of 16 in 1985, losing to eventual National Champion Stanford.
Â
The pair held steady inside the top-50 of the ITA/Oracle Doubles Rankings in every spring poll, peaking at No. 21 (April 16). Bizhukova and Bellucco, from Russia and Italy respectively, finished the regular season 11-10 overall with wins over five ranked opponents and rank No. 27 in the latest poll. The duo reached the semifinal of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships for the first time in school history in October.
