WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita State softball team wraps up the regular season at Wilkins Stadium with American Athletic Conference leader USF starting on Friday at 6 p.m. at Wilkins Stadium.
SCOUTING USF
USF is coming off nine straight wins, with its last loss coming to No. 6 Florida on April 10. The Bulls have swept the last five conference series, with their last conference loss coming on March 24 to Tulsa. USF holds a two-game lead over Tulsa for the American Athletic Conference regular season championship and collecting two wins this weekend will solidify that accomplishment. While USF is not a strong hitting team (.251 batting average on the year), the Bulls can get the job done on offense. AnaMarie Brunt leads the conference in hits with 60 and leads USF with a 3.73 batting average. Brunt also has some speed, leading the Bulls with 27 stolen bases this season. The Bulls rely heavily on their pitching staff, who has a 1.84 earned run average. Georgina Corrick is USF's ace, who has 22 wins in the circle with three losses. She has struck out 221 batters while holding an ERA of 0.84. Cheyenne Eggens adds some depth with a 2.35 ERA while Nicole Doyle does damage in the starting rotation with a 2.61 ERA and 77 strikeouts.
LAST MEETING
After claiming a shutout win in Tampa, USF's pitching stepped up. The Bulls' pitchers held the Shockers to just two runs in the final two regular season games of the year, allowing USF to claim the regular season conference championship.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the first time USF makes the trip to Wichita. Wichita State leads the all-time series 4-3, holding an undefeated record of 3-0 against USF on a neutral field.
SEEKING 30
Wichita State is searching for 30 wins in a season for the 15th time in program history. Head coach
Kristi Bredbenner would become the first head coach in program history to obtain five consecutive 30-win seasons in Shocker Softball history. Her and Jim Maynard are the only head coaches at Wichita State to obtain four consecutive 30-win seasons.
GETTING 'EM AROUND
Senior
Laurie Derrico needs one home run to claim the program's home run record by herself. Currently tied for the most home runs with 39, Derrico would pass Cacy Williams (2014-16). Derrico has reached double figures in home runs in the previous two seasons.
LAYING DOWN THE BUNTS
The Shockers are not shy about sacrificing an at-bat to advance a runner to the next base. Wichita State has five players hitting .500 or better when bunting.
Ryleigh Buck and
Wylie Glover are second in the American Athletic Conference in sacrifice bunts with seven each.
EXECUTING WHEN IT COUNTS
When the Shockers have runners in scoring position, they make sure to send drive in the runs. Wichita State has six players hitting .300 or better when runners are in scoring position, with
Ryleigh Buck has a .385 batting average.
Lauren Mills and
Neleigh Herring have provided power in those situations, both hitting above .400.
POWER OFF THE BENCH
Not only have the Shocker starters been producing offensively, but have added depth when they call for a pinch hitter. Wichita State has five different pinch hitters collecting hits this season, with three of them having a batting average of .333 or better.
Mauriana Jamele leads the team with an .800 batting average as a pinch hitter, with
Neleigh Herring hitting .600 when she is called off from the bench. Wichita State's pinch hitters are hitting .344 collectively compared to their opponents at .229.
GAME 100
Bailee Nickerson will play in her 100th career game this weekend. The Paris, Texas native has started 49 of 48 games this season, improving her batting average from .247 to .261 this season.
LATE INNING MAGIC
In addition to outscoring its opponents 88-72 in the final three innings, Wichita State batters have hit at their best when the game is coming down to the wire.
Lauren Mills is hitting .600 while
Laurie Derrico has had a .529 batting average with nine hits in the sixth inning.
Wylie Glover has added a .412 batting average in the fifth inning this season, leading the Shockers with seven hits.
GOOD NO. 1
Sydney McKinney has turned into a reliable leadoff hitter in her first season as a Shocker. She is leading the team in hits with 51 and has an average of one hit per game. McKinney is one hit shy of cracking the top five in the AAC, with Houston's Arielle James having 52.
