Shockers Come Up Short in First Game with UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Wichita State softball team took an early lead against American Athletic Conference leader UCF on Friday, but the Knights came back to score three unanswered runs and defeat the Shockers 3-2.

Sydney McKinney recorded her eighth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Erin McDonald pitched her ninth game where she went six or more innings, posting three strikeouts in the process.

After a double by McKinney, Madison Perrigan drove her home off a single up the middle to give the Shockers the early one-run lead. UCF attempted to get going early a half-inning later with a leadoff single, but McDonald forced a fly out, groundout and a strikeout to keep the Shockers ahead.

UCF forced the Shockers into a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second, responding on the offensive end with two consecutive singles a half-inning later. A fly out from Kyra Klarkowski tied the game, with a single to right field from Erin Emanuel scoring the go-ahead run for the Knights.

Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Wichita State in the bottom of the third with one out, but UCF forced an infield fly to the shortstop and a fly out to left field to leave the runners stranded. UCF responded with an RBI double following a hit by pitch, giving the Knights a two-run advantage.

A walk drawn by Wylie Glover and a single by Ryleigh Buck allowed the Shockers to strike with no outs. UCF, however, came up with a pick off play to second and forced a strikeout and a groundout to second to prevent any damage to its lead.

The Shockers continued to fight in the last half-inning, with Mauriana Jamele coming up with a pinch hit single to lead things off. After advancing to second off a passed ball, the Shockers drove in another run off a sacrifice grounder by Buck. UCF forced the Shockers into a fly out to center field to end the game.

Buck extended her hit streak to five games in her first trip back to UCF since transferring from the program in the fall of her freshman season.

Wichita State (21-17, 2-5) continues the series with UCF on Saturday with first pitch starting at 2 p.m. CST.
