WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita State softball team will wrap up its 10-game homestand on Wednesday, facing Missouri in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
SCOUTING MISSOURI
Despite coming into Wichita with a 17-14 record, Missouri is still heavily considered an NCAA Tournament team. The Lady Tigers have six top 25 wins this season, including five in a row against Kentucky (3) and Georgia (2). Not only are they a threat in the SEC, but they provide power at the plate with a .310 batting average. Jazmyn Rollin leads Missouri with a .453 batting average and has collected 24 hits, coming up wtih six home runs in the process. The Lady Tigers have nine batters hitting .300 or better, including Abby George (.414) and Kara Decker (.389). Kim Wert is Missouri's slugger, hitting 10 home runs on the year and driving in 30 runs. Madi Norman is Missouri's ace in the circle, coming up with a 2.69 earned run average while leading the team in strikeouts with 55.
LAST MEETING
Missouri and Wichita State were scheduled to play five times between 2017 and 2018, but weather for three games and Missouri electing to exercise the provision to "buy-out" the contractual agreement for two scheduled games in 2018, the last meeting came in 2016. The Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 lead heading into the fourth inning, resulting in a 9-2 win over the Shockers in Columbia.
BACK WHERE IT ALL STARTED
Freshman
Sydney McKinney will be playing against her former school for the first time. After signing a letter of intent and enrolling in the Fall semester at Missouri, the Norborne, Mo., native elected to transfer to Wichita State for the spring. Her impact has been immediate, starting her first year with a .321 batting average and fielding .990 at third base.
FRIENDLY COMPETITION
As leaders of Wichita State's all-time slugging percentage list,
Madison Perrigan and
Laurie Derrico have been competing for the top spot. Perrigan recently passed Derrico for the third-highest slugging percentage in program history this weekend, now having a mark of .574. Cacy Williams (2014-16) leads the pack with a .637 career slugging percentage.
BUCK BOMBS
Ryleigh Buck has provided an offensive spark for the Shockers in the previous four games, hitting .545 with six hits. Buck has come up with at least two hits in two of the last four games, driving in five RBIs in the process. The Wellington, Kan., native came up with her second American Athletic Conference honor roll of the season this week and has collected a hit in nine of the last 10 games.
FEEDING OFF THE FANS
It's clear the Shockers have fed off the fan support at Wilkins Stadium. The Shockers have not had an attendance mark below 300 this season, averaging an attendance of 392 through the first 10 home games.
TAKE YOUR BASE
Freshman
Lauren Mills has helped the Shockers offensively from the jump as a freshman, utilizing her at-bats to get on base. Mills currently leads the American Athletic Conference in on-base percentage, dominating the way with a .540 mark.
EXECUTING WHEN IT COUNTS
When the Shockers have runners in scoring position, they make sure to send drive in the runs. Wichita State has six players hitting .300 or better when runners are in scoring position, with
Ryleigh Buck leading the way with a .441 batting average.
Lauren Mills and
Neleigh Herring have provided power in those situations, both hitting above .400.
TAKING THE LEAD
Sydney McKinney has embraced the role of starting in the leadoff spot, having started in that batting order 16 times this season. When McKinney is the leadoff hitter, she is hitting .385 and leading the the team in leadoff hits with 10. In the previous series against UConn, McKinney collected two hits in two of the three outings.
HITTING SOLO
When there is a bases empty situation, Wichita State has no problem taking matters into its own hands. Out of 14 players with an opportunity to be the first to get on base, the Shockers have nine batters who are hitting .300 or better in a bases empty situation.
Asea Webber leads the way with a .556 batting average and four doubles with no runners on, with
Kaylee Huecker hitting .500 in that category.
Wylie Glover leads the team in hits with the bases empty, collecting 13 hits so far this season.
