LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Wichita State University baseball team scored nine runs, including six with two outs, as it rolled to a 9-1 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks Tuesday, April 2, at Hoglund Ballpark.

Wichita State (17-12), which has now won a season-best six consecutive games, is scheduled to resume American Athletic Conference play with a three-game series at Tulane April 5-7 in New Orleans, La.

Freshman
David VanVooren went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, while junior
Jacob Katzfey tallied a double and triple, and batted in a run, leading Wichita State at the plate.
Jordan Boyer (double) and
Luke Ritter (double) also compiled extra-base hits in the contest.

Junior right-hander
Tommy Barnhouse (2-2) earned the win on the mound after allowing one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in a career-high seven innings pitched. Â

The Shockers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring a trio of runs with two outs in the top of the third.

Hunter Gibson plated the opening run of the game, scoring Boyer with a single through the right side, before Ritter belted a double off the centerfield wall, bringing in Gibson for the second run of the frame.
Ross Cadena provided the final run of the inning, hitting a single to center that plated Ritter.

The Jayhawks (15-13) trimmed the WSU lead to 3-1 after catcher Jaxx Groshans hit a lead-off solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, but Wichita State responded in the top of the fifth, scoring a run when Katzfey hit a lead-off triple off the right field wall, prior to scoring on Boyer's sacrifice fly, building the Shocker advantage to 4-1.

Wichita State increased its lead to 6-1 with a pair of runs in the sixth on a RBI double to right from Katzey and a RBI single off the bat of VanVooren, before scoring three in the top of the eighth to balloon its advantage to 9-1.

VanVooren brought in the opening two runs of the frame after ripping a double to left-center, before scoring on Boyer's RBI single through the right side.

Groshans led KU in the batter's box with two hits and a homer.

Kansas starter Steve Washilewski (2-1) took the loss after surrendering four earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk in five innings of work.
