Shockers Run-Rule ECU for Sixth Straight League Win

WICHITA, Kan. - Scoring in three straight innings, the Wichita State softball team won its sixth straight conference game on Thursday night at Wilkins Stadium, defeating ECU 8-0.

Bailee Nickerson, Sydney McKinney and Laurie Derrico led the Shockers with two hits in three at-bats each and Erin McDonald came up with her 11th win of the season, only allowing four hits while striking out three batters.

Wichita State's RBIs were spread out between four players and seven different batters collected a hit, with Bailee Nickerson leading the way with four. Derrico drove in a run for the second consecutive game and one more RBI would put her in a tie with Cacy Williams (2014-16) for second for most RBIs in program history at 135. Friday also marked the first time in Derrico's career where she stole two bases.

Starting the inning by forcing a groundout to herself, McDonald allowed two ECU runners to get on base after a walk and hit by pitch. Following a strikeout and another hit by pitch, McDonald and the Shockers got out of the top of the first by forcing a groundout to the second base.

ECU forced two straight outs in the bottom of the second, but a walk drawn by Neleigh Herring and the first single of the game from Kaylee Huecker gave the Shockers some offensive life. Adi Reese put the Shockers on the scoreboard first by lacing a single up the middle to score Herring from second.

The Shockers kept the bats rolling in the following inning, with McKinney and Madison Perrigan obtaining singles that put runners at the corners with one out. Derrico's single up the middle allowed the Shockers to take a two-run lead and Nickerson's fourth home run of the season pushed Wichita State out in front 5-0.

After forcing ECU to two outs, a walk and two singles loaded the bases for the Pirates. Looking to get their first run of the game, the Shockers shutdown the Pirates by forcing a ground out to second base to keep ECU scoreless.

After a McKinney walk and stealing second in the bottom of the fourth, Buck collected her seventh home run of the season to extend the Shockers' lead to seven runs. Three straight walks loaded the bases for Wichita State, but Herring hit into a groundout to second that allowed ECU to avoid a run rule.

ECU drew a walk and came up with a single to right field to put runners on first and second, but the Pirates were forced into three straight outs to strand the runners and protect the Shockers' lead at seven. The Shockers loaded the bases with two walks and a single by McKinney, but ECU came up with the force out at the plate and a groundout to third base to once again prevent the eighth Shocker run from scoring.

The Shockers forced ECU into a 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth, with Derrico getting on base with a single and coming up with her second stolen base of the game. Nickerson drove in her fourth RBI of the game with a single to right field to end the game in run rule thanks to the Shockers' eighth unanswered run.

Wichita State (27-19, 8-5) continues the series with ECU on Friday at 3 p.m. at Wilkins Stadium.
