Shockers Fall to Memphis at San Diego Classic

SAN DIEGO – The Wichita State men's tennis team fell short to Memphis, 4-2, Saturday on day two of the San Diego Classic at the Aztec Tennis Complex.

The Shockers (10-9) looked to rally after dropping the doubles point, but fell just short in the second meeting between the programs this season.

DOUBLES
The Shockers dropped the doubles point for the second time this season to the Tigers, losing decisions on courts two and three. WSU gained early momentum from Murkel Dellien and Marius Frosa in the top slot, where the junior duo knocked off No. 30 David Stevenson and Oscar Cutting. Dellien and Frosa trailed 3-1 early, before rallying to win 6-4. The win marks their fourth in a row, and second over a top-30 opponent.

Haru Inoue and Eddie Stoica teamed up for the first time this season, where they took on Jan Pallares and Patrick Sydow in the second spot. The duo seen an early 2-1 lead disappear, falling 6-3 to the Tiger duo. It was a all-freshman team in the third flight with Stefan Latinovic and Orel Ovil pairing up. The tandem hung around with Matt Story and Jeremy Taylor, where the two became knotted at five. The Memphis duo won the final two games to take the match and clinch the point.

SINGLES
The Shockers fell behind 2-0 early in singles play, where Cutting – who holds a 10-2 dual record – dropped Latinovic, 6-1, 6-3. Latinovic defeated Cutting in their meeting earlier this season in Wichita.

Inoue put the 48th-ranked Shockers on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Chris Patzanovsky in the top slot to improve to 9-5 in dual action. Memphis answered in the third flight, where Frosa and Taylor met. In WSU's 4-3 win over Memphis earlier this season, the two battled in a three-set thriller, with Frosa earning the clinching point. Taylor came out on the winning end in today's match, dropping Frosa 6-2, 6-2 to put the Tigers up 3-1.

Dellien improved to 5-3 in the second slot, knocking off Pallares for the second time this season, 6-1, 7-5 and putting the Shockers within one, at 3-2.

Memphis clinched the match over the Shockers in the fourth flight. Stoica took on Story in what was a close match until the finish. Stoica fell 6-4 in the first, and hung around in the second before falling 7-5 and giving the Tigers the 4-2 win.

The Shockers will have one more match tomorrow at the San Diego Classic with a time and site TBD.
