CLEARWATER, Fla. - After dropping the first two games of the USF Spring Invitational on Friday, Wichita State claimed a 5-4 win over Towson on Saturday, before falling in the nightcap to No. 21 Minnesota, 5-0.
Madison Perrigan led the way offensively, totaling four hits with three RBIs.
Erin McDonald picked up her fifth win of the season in the victory against Towson to go with four strikeouts.Â
Game One
Towson struck first, leading off the top of the second inning with a double to left center and scoring off a single down the left field line. The Shockers answered back following Perrigan's leadoff double, with
Ryleigh Buck bringing her home on a sacrifice fly to center field.Â
After going through the next two innings with only one hit, Towson regained the lead on a single up the middle following a walk and hit by pitch in the top of the fifth. Wichita State responded again a half-inning later, with
Sydney McKinney driving in
Neleigh Herring from second on a double to left center.Â
Towson kept the heat on, going up by two runs in the top of the sixth. Following a walk, Towson drilled a triple to center field that drove in the go-ahead run and scored another insurance run off a Wichita State fielding error.Â
Asea Webber and
Laurie Derrico drew two walks to put the tying run at first base, setting up Perrigan for the go-ahead plate appearance. Perrigan's fifth bomb of the season, a three-run homer to left field, allowed the Shockers to take a one-run lead and snap a two-game losing streak.Â
Hailey Martinez made her second start of the season and pitched two innings, with
Kaylee Huecker adding a hit that marks seven out of the last eight that she has obtained at least one hit.Â
Game TwoÂ
Minnesota jumped to the early lead and never looked back, scoring the game's first run off a sacrifice fly following a hit by pitch and a walk. The Golden Gophers added to the lead after a wild pitch from McDonald to make it a 2-0 game.Â
Going scoreless for the next four innings, Minnesota added to its lead in the top of the sixth. A solo home run from Natalie DenHartog to left field pushed the Golden Gophers out in front by three runs.Â
After limiting the Shockers to just three hits through six innings, Derrico came up with a two-out double that put Wichita State in a position to cut its deficit. Perrigan, however, struck out swinging to leave Derrico stranded at second.
Following a leadoff double, a single looked to give Minnesota its fourth run. Webber, however, made the throw from center field to Perrigan on time at the plate to get the force out and keep things knotted at 3-0. Minnesota's MaKenna Partain made up for it in her next at-bat, smashing a two-run home run to center field that gave the Golden Gophers a five-run advantage.Â
Wichita State (18-8) looks to end its trip in the USF Spring Invitational on a high note on Sunday, finishing off its last non-conference tournament of the season with Monmouth at 8 a.m. CT.Â
