Late Rally Not Enough to Lift Shockers

CHARLESTON, S.C. - A late seventh inning rally was not enough to lift the Wichita State softball team in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Shockers dropped their second game of the season, falling to Pitt 4-2 at Patriots Point.

Ryleigh Buck came up with her first triple of the season, scoring a run in the process and leading the team with nine putouts. Bailey Lange came up with five strikeouts in six innings pitched in the circle.

Pitt came close to jumping ahead in the first three innings, but three strikeouts from Bailey Lange allowed the Shockers to keep the score knotted at zero. Following a leadoff single, Pitt scored the game's first run off a single up the middle in the top of the fourth.

The Panthers kept that momentum going in the next inning, with Brie Horrell getting a single and then advancing to third base off a Shocker error in the outfield. A double to center field allowed Pitt to extend its lead to two runs, but Wichita State left with limited damage after getting the outs that left the runners in scoring position stranded.

It didn't take Wichita State long to respond, as Asea Webber drew a walk and was brought home by Ryleigh Buck after a triple to right. Buck would tie the score seconds later, advancing to home off a Pitt throwing error.

After drawing a walk, Pitt regained the lead following a single to right center. The Panthers doubled their advantage before the top of the sixth concluded, drawing a bases loaded walk that scored another run.

Webber gave life to the Shockers in the bottom of the seventh, obtaining a leadoff single that put the tying run at the plate. Bailee Nickerson singled down the right field line, leaving the bases loaded.

Pitt would end the rally, however, forcing Neleigh Herring to line out and tagging Webber out at the plate.

The Panthers held Wichita State to just three hits in its 23 at-bats, with Pitt collecting seven hits in the process.
