Shockers Collect Two Wins Monday in Tennessee

NASHVILLE – The Wichita State men's tennis team collected two wins over Middle Tennessee State and Tennessee State Monday, in Murfreesboro and Nashville.
 
The Shockers (4-3) won a 4-3 battle against Middle Tennessee at the Adams Tennis Complex, and followed with a 7-0 sweep over Tennessee State at the TSU Tennis Complex.

Doubles
Junior Eddie Stoica and Marius Frosa, who competed on court one for the first five matches of the season, took on Stijn Slump and Daniel Stormon of MTSU in the second slot. The duo rolled, winning 6-0 to give WSU the early advantage. Stefan Latinovic and Andrea Caligiana faced off against Max Rauch and Francisco Rocha in flight three. After jumping out to an earl 2-0 lead, Rauch and Rocha stormed back to take the set, 6-3.
 
Murkel Dellien and Haru Inoue improved to 4-1 on the season, collecting a 7-5 win in their first match in the top flight. The tandem held off a late Blue Raider rally after jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Trailing 4-3, Dellien and Inoue stayed in match untll the end and came out ahead, 7-5.
 
Singles
Middle Tennessee's Francisco Rocha put the Blue Raiders on the board first in singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Orel Ovil in the sixth flight.
 
The Shockers stayed strong in the top two flights, with Inoue and Dellien collecting straight-set wins to out WSU on top, 3-1.
 
Inoue found redemption over Moonen (6-2, 6-2), after falling to him last season in Wichita. With the win, Inoue improves to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in the top flight. Dellien was dominant over Slump in the latter court, redeeming a 6-3, 6-2 to give WSU the two-point lead.
 
The last three flights all came down to the wire between the Shockers and Blue Raiders. In the fourth flight, Caligiana took on Edge of MTSU. The two traded games in the first set, before going to a tiebreaker. Edge came away on top in the breaker, and won 6-4 in the second to make the score 3-2, Shockers.
 
Stoica went three sets with Pavel Motl on court five. The senior rolled in the first (6-3), before Motl claimed the final two sets (6-3, 6-4) to tie the match at three with one court remaining.
 
Frosa, a native of Romania, showed nothing but grit and fight throughout his match on court three. The junior trailed in the first set 5-1 and came all the way back to tie the set at five, before falling 7-5. Frosa again was down 5-3 in the second, but with the match on the line rallied to win the set in a tiebreaker to force a decisive third. Frosa used that momentum in the third set, where he rolled over Rauch (6-1) to clinch the match for the Shockers.

The Shockers switched up the doubles lineup against the Tigers, with senior Austin Williams seeing his first action of the season.
 
Latinovic and Caligiana moved up to the top spot, and won a 6-1 decision over Stefan Koruga and Leandros Miscrachis. Dellien and Stoica teamed up in the second flight, rolling over Juan Rojas Antezana and Alberto Gonzales in a 6-0 decision to clinch the doubles point. Williams and Inoue were up 5-2 over Larry Sloan and Kato Richardson when play was suspended.
 
Singles
It was a new look lineup for the Shockers in singles play, with all six players collecting a win. Williams jumped to the number four spot, while Latinovic competed in the two slot.
 
Williams put the Shockers up 2-0 with a straight-set win over Larry Sloan (6-3, 6-0). Stoica followed on court five, winning a 6-0, 6-0 match over Gonzalez. Dellien clinched his second singles win of the day in the top flight, with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Misdrachis. Latinovic, in his first year with the Shockers, collected his first collegiate singles win over Koruga, (6-1, 6-3). Caligiana took on Rojas Antezana, winning 6-3, 6-4 on court three over…Ovil wrapped the the 7-0 sweep on court six, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Richardson to put up his first dual singles win as a Shocker.
