After sweeping two home games last week, Wichita State players swept the American Athletic Conference's weekly awards on Monday afternoon.
Â
Markis McDuffie was named Player of the Week and
Jamarius Burton became the first Shocker to take home Freshman of the Week.
Â
McDuffie – a 6-foot-8 senior from Paterson, N.J. – scored 27 points in Saturday's 79-68 win over Tulsa and averaged 21.0 points over the two games. It was his second player of the week nod this year (the other came after a 32-point outburst in the season's opening week).
Â
In addition to his ninth 20-point performance of the year, McDuffie's energy was instrumental in helping WSU fight back from an eight-point deficit midway through the second half against Tulsa. He finished with a career-best five offensive rebounds and scored putbacks on four of them.
Â
McDuffie has hit at least one three-pointer in 12-consecutive games and is on track for one of the five highest single-season totals in program history. In Wednesday's win against SMU he scored 15 points and moved into the top-25 on WSU's career points list.
Â
Burton – a 6-4 true freshman from Charlotte, N.C. -- averaged 9.0 points and 6.5 assists in 33.5 minutes. He finished with a 4.33 (13:3) assist-to-turnover ratio and knocked down 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Â
Burton tallied a career-high seven assists with just one turnover in WSU's 85-83 win over SMU on Wednesday and added six more on Saturday afternoon while knocking down a pair of three-pointers. Prior to his 3-for-5 effort this week, Burton had hit just three treys all season.
Â
With Burton at the controls, the Shocker offense averaged 82.0 points and had more than twice as many assists as turnovers (34:16). Burton now shares the team lead in assists. It's been 32 years since a true freshman led the Shockers in that category.
Â
Wichita State (10-11, 3-6 American) goes in search of its first true road win Wednesday night at ECU. The 6 p.m. CT tip airs nationally on ESPNEWS. Join Mike Kennedy for the INSTRUST Bank Pregame Show beginning at 5 p.m. CT on KEYN 103.7 FM and online at GoShockers.com/Listen.
