Shockers Split Two Games Saturday in Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Wichita State University baseball team split two games in the UT Arlington Classic Saturday, Feb. 23, at Clay Gould Ballpark, dropping game one to the host UT Arlington Mavericks, 5-2, before rolling to an 18-2 victory in the nightcap against Stephen F. Austin.

The Shockers (2-5) are slated to play UT Arlington Sunday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. to wrap up play in the classic.

Wichita State tallied a season-best 17 hits and plated at least one run in all but two innings in the 18-2 dismantling of Stephen F. Austin (2-5) in game two. The 18 runs were the most scored in a single game since WSU won 18-2 over Western Illinois during the 2015 season.

Four WSU players compiled multiple hits in the game, led by seniors Mason O'Brien and Luke Ritter. O'Brien went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, a homer and double, while Ritter compiled three hits with three runs scored and three RBI.

Sophomore right-hander Liam Eddy (1-1) earned his first win of 2019 on the mound after allowing two earned runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Wichita State fell behind, 1-0, early after the Lumberjacks plated a run in the bottom of the first inning.

The deficit didn't last long though, as the Shockers exploded for four runs in the top of the second inning, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. O'Brien set the tone for the frame, belting a lead-off home run on a 1-0 pitch over the right field fence. It was his first round-tripper of the season. Jordan Boyer put WSU in front for good with a two-run single to left that scored Ross Cadena and Jake Plastiak, before Ritter drove in Jacob Katzfey on an infield single to third base for the fourth and final run of the frame.

After being held to no runs in the third, the Shockers plated two in the fourth, one in the fifth, four in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in both the eighth and ninth innings to coast to the victory.

Brandon Uhse had three hits and two runs scored, pacing Stephen F. Austin

Joseph Sgambelluri (0-2) took the loss for SFA after giving up six earned runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

In WSU's 5-2 setback to UT Arlington (5-2) in the opening game Saturday, the Shockers fell behind 3-0 in the third inning and could never recover.

Boyer went 2-for-4 with a run, and Ritter added a double, run and drove in a run, leading Wichita State against UTA.

Junior right-hander Preston Snavely (1-1) suffered the loss on the mound for the Shockers after he allowed five earned runs on nine hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Andrew Miller paced the Mavs, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Anthony Dominguez homered in the contest.

Reliever Michael Wong (1-0) picked up the victory after allowing no earned runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout in 2 1/3 innings, while Andrew Gross secured his second save of the season after tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings with a strikeout.
