RUSTON, La. - Holding Southeast Missouri to only one hit, the Wichita State softball team obtained its first win of the La Tech Invitational. The Shockers defeated the Redhawks 8-0 in five innings on Friday morning.Â
Bailey Lange came up with two strikeouts in five shutout innings in the circle, obtaining her first win of the season. Lange was also a heavy contributor on offense, hitting her first home run of the season and driving in two RBI.Â
After
Bailey Lange forced Southeast Missouri into a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first,
Sydney McKinney got the Shocker offense going with a leadoff single up the middle. With the bases loaded,
Laurie Derrico's left-center single allowed the Shockers to strike first with a one-run lead.Â
The Shockers extended their lead early in the first inning, scoring a run off an SEMSU illegal pitch. While the Redhawks attempted to string together some runs with a runner on in the top of the fourth, Wichita State's defense was quick to respond. A diving catch by
Laurie Derrico retired the side of the inning and protected the Shockers' two-run lead.Â
Wichita State capitalized the following half-inning, with
Ryleigh Buck giving the Shockers a four-run lead with a center field double. Lange followed up moments later, hitting her first home run of the season that gave the Shockers a 6-0 lead.Â
Following a strikeout by Lange to end the top of fifth inning,
Asea Webber drove in an insurance run to extend the lead by seven. Webber would score off a sacrifice fly, ending the game in a run rule.Â
Eight of Wichita State's nine batters collected at least one hit, with three Shocker batters collecting two RBI.Â
