Shockers Roll Past Central Arkansas

WICHITA, Kan. – Helped by 30 Central Arkansas turnovers, Wichita State rolled to a 95-69 home victory on Thursday evening at Charles Koch Arena.

Ten players combined for 16 steals – most by a Shocker team in over a decade and one of the five best single-game totals in program history.

30 turnovers were also the most by a WSU foe in nearly 35 years. The Shockers forced 34 in a win over Hartford on Dec. 30, 1984.

Grant Sherfield scored 14 of his team-high 15 points in the first half for WSU (7-1), which used runs of 11-0 and 10-0 to build a 53-28 halftime lead.

Jaime Echenique, Tyson Etienne, Erik Stevenson and Jamarius Burton added 13 points apiece, and Morris Udeze finished with eight points and team-best six rebounds.

Eddy Kayouloud paced UCA (1-7) with 23 points and eight rebounds.

The Shockers scored 39 points off turnovers and outscored the visitors 17-1 on second chance opportunities. The Bears managed just three offensive rebounds for the night.

UCA shot 49 percent from the field – best by a WSU opponent this year – and hit 8-of-21 threes.

WSU finished the game at 47.3 percent from the field and knocked down 11-of-28 from long range.

NOTABLE:
  • The Shockers improved to 6-0 at home this year with eight-straight wins.
  • Gregg Marshall's 509th career victory ties him with former Tulsa and Arkansas boss Nolan Richardson for 94th all-time among Division I head coaches.
  • WSU moves to 64-18 (.780) under Marshall in the month of December.
  • Marshall overhauled his lineup. Three Shockers made their season debuts in the starting-five. Etienne (shooting guard) first career start. Burton (point guard) and Echenique (center) started 28 and 34 times respectively last year but had opened this season in reserve roles.
  • Echenique is the fourth different center that Marshall has started this year. Udeze had started each of the five previous games.
  • By the midway point of the first half 12 different Shockers had already checked in and WSU enjoyed a comfortable 24-10 cushion. The Shockers led by as many as 30 at the 3:25-mark.
UP NEXT:
  • Wichita State returns to the floor Sunday afternoon at Oklahoma State (1 p.m. CT, ESPNU).
  • A visit to Stillwater marks WSU's only non-conference true road game and tips off a four-year home-and-home series with the Cowboys.
  • The Cowboys lead the all-time series 30-9 (15-3 in Stillwater).
  • WSU won the last meeting between the two in December, 2017, keyed by 30 points from Landry Shamet.
  • WSU closed the 2018-19 season with six-consecutive road wins. That streak is now tied with VCU for the nation's third-longest active run, trailing only North Carolina (10) and Gonzaga (9).
  • Since the start of the 2013-14 season, WSU's .789 true road winning percentage ranks No. 2 nationally behind Gonzaga (.789).
