GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico – Virginia Tech knocked down 18 three-pointers in 30 tries to shoot past Wichita State in the final game of the Puerto Rico Coqui Classic, 84-63, Saturday afternoon.
Wichita State (7-5) went 1-1 in its two games in Puerto Rico, both first time meetings with its opponents. Virginia Tech's 18 three-pointers were a season high for a Shocker opponent, while also outrebounding WSU by 16 – another season high.
Maya Brewer scored a team-high 14 points, marking her fourth game of the season with 10-plus points.
Mariah McCully extended her streak of games in double digits to six straight after adding 10.
Ashlei Kirven set a new career best with 12 points to go with seven rebounds.
The Shockers were outscored by 45 points beyond the arc after WSU only made 3-of-13 attempts from long range. WSU shot 36 percent from the field overall and 16-of-20 from the free throw line.
Virginia Tech (10-1) finished with five in double figures led by Aisha Sheppard's 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from beyond the line. Taja Cole (15 points, 10 assists), Trinity Baptiste (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Lydia Rivers (11 points, 12 rebounds) all collected double-doubles for the Hokies.
Wichita State got the start they wanted, scoring the game's first six points – four of them belonging to
Raven Prince. Virginia Tech didn't get its first score until the 6:50 mark of the opening quarter.
The Hokies found their rhythm in the final minutes of the period, closing on an 11-3 run to lead 18-14 after 10 minutes. Brewer (6) and Prince (4) combined for 10 of the team's 14 points.
Brewer's hot start carried into the start of the second quarter, as she scored four of the team's first six points to put her in double figures and pulling the Shockers within a point, 21-20. Late in the quarter Virginia Tech took its largest lead, 35-26, behind a 7-0 run.
Vendela Danielsson's deep three-pointer snapped the spurt to pull WSU within six.
Carla Bremaud's layup brought Wichita State within four and only 12 seconds left in the half, as it looked as if the Shockers would take the momentum into the break until a last second offensive rebound and putback put the Hokies up 40-34.
Brewer's 10 first half points led all scorers, but the Shockers had trouble locking down the three-point line. Virginia Tech connected on 8-of-14 attempts from beyond the arc and shot 48 percent overall. VT also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Shockers by 10 to offset its 13 turnovers.
At the midway point of the third quarter, Virginia Tech continued to hold a six-point lead until a quick 5-0 run gave the Hokies their largest lead, 55-44, at the 2:50 mark. Dara Mabrey's trey from the right wing in the waning seconds of the period sent the Hokies into the final period leading 62-48.
A Bremaud three-pointer briefly brought WSU within 13 until the Hokies answered with another triple of their own to go back up by 16, 71-55.
The fourth quarter was all Virginia Tech, as all seven of the Hokies' made field goals came from three-point range. VT would lead by as many as 24 in the final frame.
