Head Coach Gregg Marshall on...
...Opening Statement:
"What a difference a year makes is my first thought. We went down there last year with Markis (McDuffie) and Semajae (Haynes-Jones) and a bunch of newbies and got our head handed to us. Didn't have much fight. There was some talent there, obviously, but we didn't have the resolve or the toughness to compete with Oklahoma and they took us to the woodshed. To have the opportunity to watch our team demonstrate the resolve and the toughness today was just a testament to them and how they've grown and how they know now what it takes to win against a very talented team and a well-coached team like Oklahoma. I'm so proud of our guys."
... making a run in the second half:
"As we were making the run I thought Grant Sherfield... was getting in the paint, making the pull-up jumper or the floater, or finding the big on the roll. Once he opened it up, Tyson (Etienne) laid it in one time, Erik (Stevenson) laid it in on a reverse layup, Try Wade with the second-effort and then the third-effort on a big-time putback after Jaime (Echenique) missed the first attempt. And we missed one free-throw down the stretch and probably had a chance to shoot 12 of them. Really excited for what we are now, but more importantly for what we can become because that's a team with 10 underclassmen."Â
... Grant Sherfield leading the run in the second half:
"Yeah, and you notice he was defending well too. It wasn't just his offense; it was his defense. He was getting deflections, he was jamming it up from the weak side when he was on a non-shooter and I thought his performance today was a catalyst for that big win. That's what we preach. It takes the whole team. Everybody that played today contributed in some way, whether they played two minutes or 25 minutes. That's what it takes. You gotta have as many guys as possible contributing and clicking on all cylinders."
"He played the best basketball he's played. Today was by far his best game because he shined in a huge moment"
... Erik Stevenson's passion in the game:
"Erik is obviously in the right program. He committed to us early, he helped put together the recruiting class and he loves it. He loves being a Shocker, he loves Shocker nation, he loves the energy that was in INTRUST Bank Arena today, [and] he loves winning. He had some big-time shots in the first half... but he logged a tremendous amount of minutes and he was a catalyst as well. He was instrumental in us winning."Â
... the team's toughness after losing to West Virginia:
"Yes. Pleasantly surprised. I thought to out-rebound that club by 17 [was great]. Trey Wade goes for 11 points and 15 rebounds. Got on the glass for five offensive rebounds. Jaime (Echenique) has eight and we go 48-31 on the glass against a Big 12 team. That's the second one in a row we've dominated after getting dominated by a tremendously athletic and strong and tough West Virginia team."
Â
Freshman Grant Sherfield on...
... his performance:
"Coach is just telling me as a point guard we got to get to the paint, touch the paint every possession, and try to create something if you don't have anything for yourself. I was just trying to touch paint every time and create for my teammates."Â
"You wanna try to play your best against the best opponents. I'm just happy that I was able to do that today. I was happy I was able to control the pace, find others, and create for myself."
Â
Sophomore Erik Stevenson on...
...the difference from last year's game:
"180 from last year. We went down there and we clearly aren't as good as we are this year. It was a whole different vibe. Coming in today, it was just crazy. It was a game of runs. It seemed like every shot they threw up was going in. We couldn't catch a break for most of the game. It was frustrating, but once we had that 4-0 run and made them call a timeout, and then an 8-0 run to make it 12, it was crazy.Â
Â
Junior Trey Wade on...
... this group's mentality:
"We just come to work every day and try to get better. We try to pick each other up and coach puts us in a position to get better. We believe in what coach does for us and we just try to attack every day hard."
