Wichita State's big-man rotation is on hold until senior
Jaime Echenique returns from injury. Coach
Gregg Marshall expressed a desire for more scoring from that group after Tuesday's 68-54 win over Omaha.
Â
Starting center Asbjorn Midtgaard missed all three of his shots, as did
Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler.
Morris Udeze came off the bench to go 3 for 5 from the field, score seven points, and grab four rebounds.Â
Â
Texas Southern possesses a bit of height and it blocked three shots in an opening loss at San Diego State. Wichita State's offense works better when it uses passes out of the post and ball reversal. Shocker big men will likely get scoring chances early in this game and need to make them count.
Â
What more can Trey Wade do? The junior transfer backed up strong performances in the closed scrimmage and exhibition with 19 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Omaha. He added two assists, a block and a steal.Â
Â
Wade, who played one season at UTEP before attending junior college, is so far giving the Shockers exactly what they need – an experienced, versatile forward who scores inside and out. His play gives the Shockers some cushion as they deal with their injury issues.Â
"A core guy for sure," Shockers coach
Gregg Marshall said. "The difference in him is the ability to shoot the ball. Trey had four offensive rebounds and DeAntoni (Gordon) had three, so from that position we had seven offensive rebounds."
Texas Southern committed 19Â turnovers in its opening loss, leading to 23 points off turnovers. They gave up 26 offensive rebounds to the Aztecs, leading to 27 second-chance points.
Â
Wichita State has excelled at limiting turnovers in its early competitions – seven turnovers against Omaha and eight in the exhibition. It is also strong on the offensive glass.Â
Â
The Shockers own an edge in both of those statistical battles.Â
