COACH GREGG MARSHALL on …
Â
… New signee JaDun Michael:
"JaDun is a tremendous kid with a great family. He's a hard worker. He's one of those guys who has had the upbringing of getting up early and getting in the gym with his Dad before school. He loves being in the gym. He's a 3.8 (GPA) student and he loves to play defense. That athleticism and potential, (combined) with his desire to win and compete on both ends of the floor, make him ideal for what we were looking for. We're excited about him."
Â
… Michael's position and skillset:
"He's a wing, kind of like
Dexter Dennis. He's that type of athlete with that type of size. He's going to get bigger and fill out. He's really bouncy with a quick second jump. He's kind of a combination of Deantoni Gordon and
Dexter Dennis. We like him as a person. He's a great fit for our program."
Â
… Recent success on the recruiting trail with higher-profile recruits:
"Maybe it's been the success of putting guys in the NBA. Maybe it's the fact that we've been a good team for the better part of eight or nine years where we've won 25 games consistently. Maybe my staff is doing a different job with at least checking with those players before moving on. I'm excited we're getting those guys. They're not only good players, but they're good people."
Â
... Low turnover numbers despite playing with so many young players:
"We haven't faced a lot of pressure, to be fair. We stress not turning it over. In the Texas Southern game we shot too quickly, so we didn't have the chance to turn it over. I don't want to get too high on (the lack of turnovers), but I want to make sure they understand to value the basketball. They're doing a great job with that. We've got to continue to do that. If we continue to make shots like we did the other night and not turn the ball over, we're going to be hard to beat."
Â
… Jamarius Burton's improved three-point shooting:
"He needed to (develop that part of his game). I've told him multiple times: I think if he can make 40 percent of his threes and was a threat with that, he would be an all-conference player. He took that challenge, which is great... It's apparent that (his summer work is) paying off. It just looks better coming out of his hand. When it finds the bottom four out of five times, that gives you some confidence. Last year, it just looked like he didn't want to let it go."Â
Â
… Tyson Etienne's offensive potential:
"He's a scorer. When we recruited him, he was one of the purest shooters I'd seen. He continually put it in the bottom of the net. His biggest thing is making sure he's getting a lot of good shots, and that's with a lot of young players."
Â
… Gardner-Webb:
"Don't let 0-3 fool you. Watching them play, they're very talented. They're very well-coached. They won a couple of big games on the road last year. They won the Big South Conference tournament and beat the 1, 2 and 3 seeds to do it. They led Virginia at halftime in the first round last year. I know there's nothing less important than the score at halftime, but if you're Gardner-Webb out of the Big South, that's a pretty god accomplishment, especially when you're a 16-seed against Virginia who went on to win the whole thing. Now, Gardner-Webb has played one of the toughest schedules in the country. They played a very good Furman team. Then they go to Western Carolina, and this looks like the best Western Carolina team I've seen in a while, and I've known them for a while. Then they go to North Carolina. They're 0-3, but they've played a tough schedule and have a preseason player of the year and multiple all-conference guys. This could be the best teams that have come in here."
Â
… WSU's three-headed monster at center (Udeze, Poor Bear-Chandler and Midtgaard):
"I guess our bigs can be described as this: the sum is greater than the individual parts. I'm not sure any of them could score 26 points in 40 minutes by themselves, but they did it as a group. I don't know how they did that. Maybe we need to feed them more. It's going to be quite interesting when Jaime (Echenique) back. It's a good problem to have."
