Miscues Mount in Loss at ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Wichita State committed 21 turnovers and shot just 38 percent from the field in a road loss at ECU, 78-56, Wednesday night in Minges Coliseum.

Wichita State (7-8, 0-2) dropped below the .500 mark for the first time this season with the loss. For the second straight game Wichita State lost the rebounding battle (48-28), while allowing 21 offensive rebounds. ECU's plus-20 advantage on the glass was a new season high for a Shocker opponent.

ECU (10-5, 1-1) came away with 14 steals and outscored WSU 40-18 in the paint. Despite committing 21 turnovers, WSU won that battle, as ECU turned it over 25 times. Both teams scored 27 points off turnovers.

Carla Bremaud scored a season-high 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting (4-for-8 from 3). Alyssia Faye added nine points, all in the fourth quarter, and Ashley Reid chipped in eight.

Lashonda Monk scored a game-high 23 points for ECU and Alex Frazier tallied 17.

ECU wasted little time asserting its pressure to begin the game. The Pirates led 5-0 less than 30 seconds into the contest and would lead 7-0 with 7:15 to go in the opening quarter before Wichita State attempted its first field goal.

The Pirates would lead by seven for much of the frame, but the Shockers would get three points from Asia Henderson and a running floater from Bastin to close the gap to 14-10 at the end of one quarter.

Both teams shot below 30 percent and committed 15 turnovers in the first 10 minutes.

After Wichita State finished the first quarter with some momentum, it vanished almost as quickly to begin the second. The Pirates scored six straight to build a 20-10 lead at the 8:00 minute mark.

A Shyia Smith layup would be the Shockers' lone score in the first five-plus minutes, while ECU's pressure continued to cause problems to help push the lead to 15, 27-12.

WSU went into the locker room trailing by just eight, 29-21, thanks to ECU shooting just 1-of-7 with five turnovers in the final few minutes. Reid was perfect from the field to lead the Shockers with eight first half points.

The Shockers finished the first 20 minutes shooting 31 percent with 15 turnovers, while also getting beat on the boards, 27-18. On the other side, ECU shot only 33 percent to go with 16 turnovers. Lashonda Monk led all scorers with 13 points.

Monk splashed in back-to-back three-pointers when play resumed in the third before Carla Bremaud's triple made it 35-24 ECU.

An ECU 6-0 run upped the Pirates' lead to 52-33 with 1:28 to play, forcing a WSU timeout. Out of the timeout, ECU would tack on seven more points to finish the period leading 59-33. ECU outscored WSU 17-2 over the final 4:42 to blow the game wide open.

The Pirates would lead by as many as 28 in the early stages of the fourth before WSU put together a scoring spurt. Bremaud and Alyssia Faye would swish back-to-back three pointers followed by a Cesaria Ambrosio jumper to cut the deficit to 68-49 with 4:25 remaining.

WSU would end up outscoring ECU in the final frame, 23-19, but would come no closer than 19 in the period.
