Shockers Fall to Baylor 4-1 in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas - The Wichita State women's tennis team fell, 4-1, Saturday to Baylor in first round action at ITA Kick-Off Weekend inside the Texas Tennis Center.

The Shockers clinched the doubles point with wins in flight one and two, before Baylor rallied to win four-straight singles matches to clinch the match.

From Head Coach Colin Foster
"There were a lot of positives to build on from today. Doubles obviously is something that we've taken a lot of pride in and played very well across the board. Baylor is always a very talented, physical team. I knew they wouldn't be fazed by dropping the doubles point and I give them all the credit for just outplaying us in the singles. We competed our best and were in most of the matches, just didn't have enough today. We'll bounce back and be ready to go tomorrow."

Doubles
Teaming up with Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva on court one, Esther Thebault recorded her doubles win as a Shocker, knocking off Jessica Hinojosa and Kris Sorokolet (6-3) to give the Shockers an early advantage in doubles action. Senior Sandra Honigova teamed up with Marta Bellucco in flight two, and Ting-Ya Hsu paired with sophomore Alexandra Lazarova on court three. After winning on court one, flights two and three were a battle until the end. Bellucco and Honigova traded games with Angie Shakhraichuk and Paula Baranano early, before rallying to win the final two game to clinch the doubles point for WSU.

Singles
Baylor got off to a hot start in singles play, and never looked back. The Bears reeled off four-straight singles wins to clinch the match over the Shockers. Shakhraichuk started the streak for the Bears on court four, knocking off Saidhujaeva in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Baranano followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win on court five over WSU's Lazarova. In her first dual singles match, Thebault took on Hinojoso in the number two slot. Thebault battled until the end, falling 6-1, 6-4. The Bears clinched the match in the first flight, where Kraus went head-to-head with Honigova. After rolling in the first, Kraus was tested by Honigova in the second set before coming out ahead, 7-5

Ting-Ya Hsu and Sujova were in the third set tied at two before going unfinished, while Bellucco led 2-1 over Sorokolot in the third spot.

The Shockers will take on Middle Tennessee State in consolation action tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m. CT at the Texas Tennis Center.
