Lozada-Cabbage, Bremaud Combine for 35 in Loss to UH

WICHITA, Kan. - Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage and Carla Bremaud combined for 35 of the team's 58 points, but Wichita State dropped its fifth straight game, falling 66-58 to Houston Sunday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.

Lozada-Cabbage led the Shockers with 18 points and grabbed four rebounds, while Bremaud was one point away from tying her career-high. The freshman guard scored 17 points, scoring 15 of those points in the second half.

Wichita State took early control by taking a five-point lead through the first five minutes, holding Houston to 25 percent shooting and three turnovers. The Cougars came out of the first media timeout scoring seven straight points, coming up with two steals that resulted in a two-point lead.

Raven Prince's basket plus the foul put the Shockers back in front, but a 3-pointer from Houston's Octavia Barnes quickly returned the lead to the Cougars. Barnes scored eight first quarter points, giving Houston a 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Three turnovers by Wichita State resulted in a seven-point Houston lead with under seven minutes to go in the first half. Following a back-and-forth scoring stretch, the Shockers held the Cougars scoreless for the last 4:23 and forced seven turnovers.

The Shockers shot just 36 percent in the second quarter, going into the locker room down 27-20.

Knocking down two 3-pointers and draining its first four shots of the second half, Houston managed to extend its lead to 12 three minutes into the third quarter. Houston kept the double-digit lead for most of the quarter, but a layup and 3-pointer with 10 seconds left by Bremaud shifted the momentum and allowed the Shockers to trail by only eight heading into the final 10 minutes.

A three-point play by Asia Henderson cut the deficit to five one minute into the fourth quarter, but two free throws and a layup by Houston pushed the lead back to nine. Bremaud answered back with a quick three before two consecutive baskets by the Cougars extended the lead back to double-digits.

When Houston's double-digit lead looked to doom the Shockers with three minutes to play, Lozada-Cabbage converted a four-point play by knocking down the three-point trey after being fouled. Houston answered back with a basket, but the Shockers came up with a steal that resulted in another three-point play for Prince.

Houston made its last six free throws, clinching its third conference win.

Wichita State (7-11, 0-5) will travel to New Orleans for its fourth road game in American Athletic Conference play, facing Tulane on Saturday at 2 p.m.
